The Tempest is undoubted a flagrant example of the various colonial abuses as can be easily reflected in the Prospero’s attitude to the Island, his slave Caliban and his total obsession with controlling the whole island through his absolute power. Additionally the conduct of Prospero towards his accidental find of the island and treating it like a colony highly resembles the conduct of a colonist during the 16th-17th century. Prospero treats this new colony as an exile as like other colonists of the time he owes allegiance to his home country which is considered to be home while exile in colony is meant to perpetuate the selfish interests and exploit it to the maximum before abandoning it. Additionally despite the island providing Prospero to fulfill his lifelong mission but still Prospero openly expresses his hatred for the island unlike others who are not that critical about the island. Hence Prospero’s essentially lives in a bipolar world which is segregated into his homeland and the colony. While his homeland stands for all his cherished views and beliefs, the colony instead resembles all those beliefs which he does not relate to. Additionally the conduct of Prospero on the island is highly symbolic of his colonial and ulterior motives to rule the island as a hegemonic colonizer should do and treat Caliban and the native people as slave who should be ever willing to comply with the wishes of the great colonizer (Davidson).
However, “The Tempest” is also an example of the themes of reconciliation and forgiveness which is clear from Prospero’s conduct especially towards Caliban and his brother Antonio who exiled him at the island in the first place where he had to stay for twelve long years. ...to revenge his father’s murder killing off so many other people in the process including his mother and additionally had himself ripped off the roll of honor by his own heir who he appointed at the time of his death. Had he decided not to get provoked by the ghost into entering the murderous cycle of revenge, Hamlet could have survived to assume the throne and Polonius along with Hamlet’s mother could have survived longer and most importantly the invasion on Denmark by the Norwegian prince could have been successfully averted. Hence it is also prudent to exhibit forgiveness as displayed by Prospero or else a life full of revenge is not a worthwhile life which is constantly surrounded by death threats and attempts to kill which often results in loss of near and dear ones and additionally this feud can be exploited by the rivals for procuring their strategic interests.
