Nevertheless, he is known as Jose “Joe” F. Duval, a Havanan native who migrated to the United States at the age of 20. While working in an opera house and musical theatre, Jose was found his way to success in 1959 when Doyle Dane Bernbach’s (DDB) advertising agency was hired by the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia to advertise for the Colombian coffee market. Jose took a turn in his life by working as an icon alongside with his mule, Conchita, carrying sacks of harvested coffee beans on its back in Colombian coffee print ads and television commercials which later appeared in 1968. As time passes by, Juan Valdez’s character started rising to fame across the international market. To maintain this status, DDB had to safeguard the position of this character. In 1969, Carlos Sanchez took over Jose Duval’s role for the next 37 years. Due to this, Carlos became the iconic image of Juan Valdez which appears to be familiar to coffee lovers worldwide. Upon Carlos’ retirement in 2006, Carlos Castaneda, a coffee grower from Andes, Antioquia, took over the baton.
