One of the most common issues that are part of my community is that many students are not encouraged to continue on with school. There are many reason many of my classmates think a lot about attending college. It is often seen that few students have enough support from their parents. This is due for the fact that many households are in need of multiple providers to sustain it and for it to be functional. Thus many of the parents see education as a waste of money and time. Many parents believe their student is better off at work then having to study for at least four years. Other students are faced with the reality that the parents feel like home is the best place where a person can be. Although, there is an increasing rate of latino students enrolling into college the rate of Latino students dropping out of college has not decline much. One of the biggest factors that contributes to this issues is misconceptions. This would be because as much as parents work and want to give everything to their children, there comes a point where the parents draw the line of how much is too much. They sit down and think about the now and what needs to be paid now, but forget that the student has a future. There is a misconception on the idea that the student goes to school and will not find a job. This being because parents believe the “good jobs” go to the wealthy. In order for students to gain all the support they need is by taking away the misconceptions. One of the things that is rarely said is how much a parent should be involved with a student's education. Many first generation student go through the college process on their own and often have to report back to their parents.
