If you find yourself asking “Why should I go to college”, it is important to remember that there is a significant amount of opportunity available for college graduates. The global economy is becoming increasingly more competitive, and in order to give yourself the best chance for a well-paying job, you must first understand the importance of college education. Earning a college degree is beneficial to having more options, a higher earning potential, and the future generations of our nation. College serves as a gateway to better options and more opportunity while encouraging students to think, ask questions, and explore new ideas. This allows for additional growth and development. A post-secondary degree, whether it is a bachelor’s, masters or Ph.D., is the most common route to careers that demand higher skills and offer higher pay. Studies have shown that college graduates earn a higher income throughout their lifetime compared to those with only a high school education. High school graduates earn an average of almost $32,000 per year. Bachelor’s graduates earn an average of just over $54,000 a year. Those with a higher level degree (master’s, doctorate or professional) average nearly $78,000 per year. This can be a significant salary gap over the course of one’s life. Earnings potential varies depending on what field you work in. With the career I am in now, not being a college graduate, my income is less than $20,000 a year. Once I graduate with an Associate’s degree I can start out at an entry level position with the career of my choice with a starting salary. Earning college degree plays a big part influencing on the well-being of families as well, especially their children. Not only are children of parents with a college education better off socially and economically, but studies have shown that children in households where one or both parents have a college degree are themselves more likely to earn a college degree. Earning a college degree can have an outcome that will influence the well-being of generations to come. Being a mother to two children it is my goal to have a positive influence on my own children. The more knowledge I have for myself I can, in turn, help my own children succeed in life. Earning a college degree is enabling me to make better choices for the rest of my life. Not only does a college education provide me with new knowledge and information, it teaches me how to think critically, how to break apart and reconstruct complex issues, and how to solve problems. Earning a college degree helps people make better choices from mortgage rates to launching a new business. A college education has the potential to improve not only your life, but also the life of your family, your children, your children's children, and even society in general.
