Basketball: How it has became so popular A basketball dribbling on the hardwood floor is one of the best sounds ever, but when it splashes through that white net it makes that moment so much better. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and a lot of people play it. The teams and players have also played a huge role in why this sport has become world wide. UCLA has 11 titles and that is the most in college basketball history (Rauf). So UCLA was a powerhouse in the 60’s and 70’s and they gained a lot of attention. College basketball has also had a lot of really good players in its history. But the all time leading scorer is Pete “Pistol” Maravich (Sorenson). He scored a total of 3,667 points in three years at LSU. He averaged 44.2 points per game in college. He did all of that scoring with no three point line and no shot clock too speed up the game. According to the NCAA, Trae Young averaged the most points this year with 27.4, and he can score really good. So Pistol Pete scored a lot more points than everyone in history. So that is how basketball started and how it has became more popular and grown into the sport it is today. I think basketball is awesome and it was really cool how it started, and how it grew to be so popular around the world, and it's crazy how good some people are at basketball.
