Recent NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) allegations have brought into question whether college athletes should be paid. A probe conducted by the federal government into the NCAA discovered that several schools were paying some of the top recruits in basketball to attend their schools. This is a violation of both federal law and NCAA regulations, but some people think these rules should be pulled back. Many people believe college athletes should be paid by the schools and/or through endorsements. College athletes should be paid because they go through a rigorous travel schedule and have their likenesses used without their consent without making money off of it College athletes would get a good marketing lesson from endorsements says ESPN analyst Michael Wilbon. If a football player is paid 200 dollars for his jersey, and a soccer player cannot make anything, that is a good lesson that will stick with them through life. Not all students would be paid equally because not all students are creating revenue. Paying college athletes would give the smallest sliver of payment. The NCAA strikes deals to broadcast on TV and on the internet. These athletes make these deals possible and create profit for the NCAA, but not all of the money does not go towards the athletic department (Wilbon 1). Others think that paying college athletes would not be feasible for the athletic department of the school. If an athlete were given a $100,000 salary, instead of a $65,000 scholarship, it sounds better for the athlete. That salary, though, would be subject to income tax and would be worth about the same. If an athlete were paid a salary like this, the school would be out about $35,000 dollars after income tax.
