Should College Athletes Be Paid? Becoming the topic of more and more conversations now that the NCAA seems to be growing in popularity. The debate of whether or not student athletes in college should be paid to play the sport they participate in. The NCAA has rules stating that no student participating in a sport in the NCAA divisional classes can accept money for their participation in the sports or for endorsing their name or school this among other things have angered people. The debate over whether or not athletes in college should be paid has been an ongoing conversation for a number of years now. “ These athletes are sacrificing their bodies and physical health at a chance to play a game they love, and possibly make it to the professional level.” (Should College Athletes Be Paid) Student athletes have suffered gruesome injuries and are expected to return as soon as possible without compensation. Many student athletes dreams of playing professionally have been disrupted because of the injuries suffered while playing in college. Another reason why student athletes should not be paid is because they are not professionals in their respective sport, they have not made a career out of it, yet, therefore they should not be paid like a professional. They are also there to receive an education first, there are merely just “participating” in the sport they play. “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports. They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses.” (Students Are Not Professional Athletes) Which is why they should not be paid.
