My Passion for Nursing
I believe, if you are not saving a life, you are wasting your living life. Saving lives matter. My passion for nursing was sparked many years ago, during which I made frequent visits to the hospital to visit and be with my mother, whom had been diagnosed with primary brain cancer, Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme.
My mother had many surgeries and a lot of complications. Being at the hospital for multiple days in and out each week gave me a chance to become familiar with some of the many duties that nurses complete daily. Over the course of three years, I saw the dedication and hard work nurses in the hospital environment provided to my mother and our family. Not only did these wonderful nurses take care of my family, they did a good job in assuring my family and I that everything would be fine. Spirits were up lifted, fears eased, and hope was increased, all due to the optimism of the nurses. I have always been interested in the way the human body functions and working with people. The inspiration gave me the motivation to become a nurse just like the ones who took care of my mom. When I go to the hospital, I see me taking care of others as if it was my second nature and nurturing them back to good health. I want to be a nurse that makes a difference to the patients that I will care for, and the lives of their families as well. To me, nursing is more than just medicine. Rawsi Williams said, “To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through; that is to be a nurse.” I have aspired to save lives since I was very young but never realized the depth of my passion until I held a man’s broken and bleeding head in my hands.
“.the concepts of care and compassion are difficult to define and measure, but they are driving forces in nursing” (Palos, 2014, p.247) Many claim that, the science and art components are intertwined, you cannot have one without the other. “The most competent nurses are those who can appreciate the value of achieving a balance between the science and art of nursing.” (Palos, 2014, p.248) While knowledge and skills are essential to nursing, in my opinion, caring and compassion are equally as important if not more so.
From five years old up I knew I wanted to be a nurse practitioner. When I was around 13 years old my mom got very sick which had her in and out of the hospital, this only pushed me further in the direction of becoming a nurse practitioner. I would always see nurses in and out of my mom’s room when she was in the hospital, some were nice others were not. I always tell myself, “You’re going to be one of the nice ones, the one that makes the whole ordeal just a little bit better.”
Through the traumatic experience of my father’s illness, a positive and optimistic perspective of commitment to nursing career evolved. My journey of becoming a nurse and commitment of shining a bright light on another individual life has been my life long goal. I moved to the United States in early 1980 and with God help and guidance, I followed the nursing career and promised to make a small difference. During my first years as a nursing student, I took a part-time volunteered position as a candy-stripe and a part-time position as a nurse aid in a community hospital to provide relief and support to hospital staffs. I rocked and read poems for babies in the nursery, as a nurse aid I assist nurses with vital signs, blood pressures, fill ice pitchers in patient rooms, runs specimens to labs and sit with patients in the room and feed patients. I still volunteer in my hospital oncology department and the underserved and homeless clinics with several Emory physicians at the Good Samaritan Health Center, Mercy Care and National AIDS Education and Services for Minorities (NAESM) all in Fulton County, Ga, because it gave me fulfillment and appreciative of life
A nurse’s role in our society today is exceptionally significant. Nurses are somewhat idolized and looked to as our everyday “superman”. “The mission of nursing in society is to help individuals, families, and groups to determine and achieve physical, mental, and social potential, and to do so within the challenging context of the environment in which they live and work” (“The Role of a Nurse/Midwife”). Many Americans turn to nurses for delivery of primary health care services and health care education (Whelan). In our country, there is constantly someone in need of health care. There will always be a baby being born or a person dying, someone becoming ill or growing old. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. ...he reality of the real world and that there are tough situations a nurse has to face, like not being able to better a person who is in need. I found out things I never knew about a nurse. She really helped me understand that to be a nurse one really needs to be dedicated to the patients they are seeing. I realized on that day that a nurse is more than just a job. I want to study this occupation as I attend college and hopefully continue on to the next steps on fully becoming a nurse practitioner. I think it will benefit me in all the ways that I saw her benefit her patients. After researching and learning all new information about this occupation I now know that a NP is a worthy and much needed job in our country and I know that given the opportunity and time I can achieve all the goals I am going to set in my future in order to be a certified nurse practitioner.
Ever since I was in middle school I dreamed of working in the medical field. I realized nursing was the profession for me when my grandfather became terribly sick with lung cancer during my freshman year of high school. It puzzled me that one of the healthiest and most physically active people I knew could be afflicted by such a damaging disease. After watching my grandfather’s suffering and the pain my entire family felt from his death, I knew I wanted to go into a field to help others that are facing the same challenges. This is when I discovered all of the opportunities that a career in nursing could offer me.
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. Nurses have our patients trust with their lives every day. These patients have needs that must be understood and met, whether; physical, psychological, or emotional. Nurses must provide nonjudgmental care to those in need, regardless of culture, religion, lifestyle choices, financial status, or hues of the human race. To quote Jean Watson, nursing theorist, “I am here to care for others, regardless of where they came from” (Hammarskjold, 2000). Hippocrates supposedly stated “Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity”. He believed that everybody that practiced or learned about medicine innately had compassion toward others, as in order to practice medicine, one has to care for others. Growing up in Canada as an immigrant has provided an environment in which care and compassion was not only beneficial but required. Whether it was helping our neighbors when we were living in a hostel, or taking care of certain responsibilities with my brother in order to reduce the burden for my parents; my empathy for others has only grown since then. My love for humanity and my passion for biology are the two primary reasons behind choosing the nursing program at Ryerson and choosing a career as a nurse.
I was born and raised in a family of educators. I am the youngest in my nuclear family. My father is an Industrial Engineer and my mother is a 4th grade Reading and Language Arts teacher. I have one older brother and one older sister. However, I am the only one of my parent’s children who has a child of their own.
The career i chose is a branch of the medical field. I chose a career in nursing, more specifically the career path of a registered nurse. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, or talents needed, salary, benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
I was visiting my brother in Massachusetts when I got sick on the airplane. I went to the emergency room and I was immediately admitted into the hospital. The doctor recognized my symptoms and immediately took action to medically treat my condition. I enjoyed my week stay in the hospital because the nurses and I became so close and the nurses were there for me when I needed them. The nurses kept me inform, comfort me by making me feel everything was going to be alright. The nurses that took care of me genuinely cared and guided me each step to recovery. This life changing experience gave me inspiration to continue my dream of becoming a
