Professional Roles and Values Professional roles and values are expected for all nurses. To help a nurse met these expectations the following should be considered excellent sources to aid in the understanding of role and values expected: knowing functional differences between regulatory agency and professional nursing organizations, provisions of nursing code of ethics, professional traits, nursing theories, historical nursing figures, and nursing principles.
A. Functional Differences

Provision One states, “the nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problem” (Code, 2011). I will be respectful to my colleagues and value their opinions as it relates to the care of our patient. A good team is beneficial in proving care for patients. If a nurse suggests giving the medication with milk instead of water because the patient will take it better; I will comply because we are a team and our main goal is our patient. Provision Two states, “the nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community” (Code, 2011). I work with many other members who all collaborate together to address the needs of the patient. For example, being a private duty nurse, I interact with physical therapy who also comes into the home. Many times we discuss the use of assistive devices and need for continued therapy. I work with the physical therapist as a member of the team to provide the best quality of care for our patient.
