Research Paper: Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct.
Teachers are held to a higher standard and rightfully so. Teachers can make a difference in student’s lives and influence them greatly, good or bad. When teachers follow the Code of Ethics and abide by the “rules”, many students will admire them and want to do the same. Ethical codes are set in place to protect the students and teachers. It’s always in the teacher’s best interest to abide by the ethical codes and principles, or they will be reprimanded. There are many cases of teachers violating the code of ethics and principles of professional conduct. The three that stuck out to me most were about a teacher losing her license, sexual assault, and an email about undocumented immigrants.

A principal and an Assistant Principal, both black - were having a heated conversation with a white teacher and in the middle of the argument she stated that “she hated all black folks.”
The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. I want to use this assignment as an opportunity to distinguish the true professional using the elements designed for this course.
Honor Code has evolved over the years and its becoming more strict in its ways and flaws. “Taggert accused the administration of using the code to punish rather than to help students improve themselves” (Bergera). It lists of forbidden acts are antiquated and invade the students’ sense of privacy without truly defining the quality of honor. The Davis case will enable me to understand my rights as a student and the effects of sexual harassment in schools, as every individual should act professional and ethical in whatever they do. I was also able to note that if only the two teachers and the physical education teacher had acted professionally and acted on LaShonda’s case, then they could have saved both the school board and LaShonda the agony and psychological torture that arose from the harassment and the case
As described in the introduction to these standards, they are what govern the conduct of those persons. These standards are put into place to allow for reflection and are dictated by law, individual belief systems, religion or a mixture of all three. The layout for these codes consisted of ten sections covering the following areas; The Counseling Relationship, Evaluation, Assessment and Interpretation of Client Data, Confidentiality/Privileged Communication and Privacy, Professional Responsibility, Working in a Culturally Diverse World, Workplace Standards, Supervision and Consultation, Resolving Ethical Issues, Communication and Published Works, and Policy and Political Involvement. Each of these section was made up of standards that address specific issues within the realm of that section. However, this may stem from a lack of enforcement of the rules. Even at the most prestigious schools, such as Harvard University, students are not upholding the rules implemented: “The possibility that 125 Harvard students ‘improperly collaborated’ on an exam in the spring has galvanized … discussion about … honor codes” (Source: C). In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. Educational ethics are grounded in traditional community values and a compassion of caring internalized by the educational leader. “Great schools grow when educators understand that the power of their leadership lies in the strength of their relationships” (Donaldson, 2007, p. 29). A clear understanding of the ethics of care and profession encourages a strong foundation of educational leadership. Leading with relationships as well as formal and moral standards creates a learning environment that ultimately supports all learners at a rigorous level. In Woodlock v. Orange, the school counselor, known as N.W., was advocating for systemic change on behalf of her special education students. This was well within the code of ethics. N.W. was repeatedly expressing her concerns to the administrative intern and principal. A professional school counselor is skilled and trained to use his/her best judgment when it comes to students’ rights and confidentiality. One should behave as a professional at all times and be mindful of their behavior. One not only have to be aware of professional values they should also be knowledgeable of applying these standards as they apply to the role of the school counselor. The professional school counselor is responsible for removing barriers to learning and to advocate for change for all students. Teacher Ethics “Ethics are defined as a set of principles of right conduct; the rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession” (Dictionary of the Human Language, 2000). Teachers are often put in situations that require more than just knowing the basic school rules. It is within these situations, that the ethical dilemmas occur. There is not always a right way to deal with the many daily problems that face educators, but there are ways to handle situations that are better than others. Teachers should follow and refer to a code of ethics to help teach in the most appropriate and ethical way as well as a guide to help deal with dilemmas.
