There is not a state in the U.S you cannot go to and find someone who does not recognize the name of the famously known drink, called Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola has been around for so long one can only ponder as to how Coca-Cola has stayed such a famous drink. The answer is simple Coca-Cola has always been advertised and seen as a drink that will cool and quench a person’s thirst. Over the years Coca-Cola as a drink has changed whether it is in its portrayal, ingredients, or the audience they are targeting. Coca-Cola has been around for long because they always evolve, attracting the correct audience depending on what was trending throughout the eras. When they didn’t have a direct audience to attract or their advertisement wasn’t going as well as they though they referred back to sexual advertisement knowing that will always boost their sales.
When Coca-Cola first hit the market in 1886 it was advertised more as a medicine rather than a soda. It was claimed to “relieve exhaustion” with its Coca plants and its Cola nuts and was called the “intellectual beverage” and if you were tired you were advertised to drink a Coca-Cola. Although for many people in the 21st century that sounds more like an energy drink but back in 1886 it was more of a nerve tonic. In an article called “Original Coca-Cola had a very small amount of cocaine” Jill Richardson clarifies just how much cocaine Coca-Cola companies put in their drinks stating, “A very small amount of cocaine in a six-ounce drink, about 4.3 milligrams.” The next big question to ask would be did Coca-Cola ever stop putting cocaine in the drinks? Not only the fact that sex sell but they also had to attract a new audience given the fact that Coca-Cola had become a soda. At this time Coca-Cola continued to attract men, but not working men who have a beer after a hard day at work. They began to attract younger men who at the time were starting to date and have more of in interest in women and men that at the time couldn’t drink alcohol. By 1979 Coca-Cola had a new slogan, “Have A Coke, and Smile.” In one of their advertisements Coca-Cola had three gentlemen handing a beautiful young lady a cold Coca-Cola drink straight from the cooler. Basically saying/showing that giving a dame a Coca-Cola will get you the girl and a happy one at that. Knowing that some men were trying to attract women Coca-Cola took advantage and showed them a way of getting the dame while advertising the drink. Not only that but how Smart of them to throw out their new slogan “Have a Coke and Smile” without having to write it all out in the ad. Fooling the consumer making them believe that “Have a Coke” was just part of the advertisement making it seem as though that is what the gentlemen are telling the girl. In the advertisement they have “Have a Coke” in a big font almost as big as the Coca-Cola sign in the bottom while the young lady stands with a big smile on her face as the men hand the young lady the cold drink.
