Would you quit your job to impress three stunning girls? Sammy was working another ordinary day at the check out line when in walked these three hot girls, the girls were wearing but bathing suits. In John Updikes A&P, Sammy was working at his cash register when he noticed three hot girls standing by the bread. They were in nothing but bathing suits. Sammy found attraction in the girl in the green bikini. Sammy had watched the girls so closely through out the store because they were stunning and rebellious.
First off, the three girls came into the store already breaking dress code, but they didn’t care. "in walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits." These three girls came into the store breaking dress code, they need more clothing covering there body to be allowed to enter the store. In the setting, the manager says, " We want you decently dressed before you come in here." this quote means that the manager of the store want the girls to leave and get more clothes on their body so they are suitable to the dress code. My reason for the girls to be stunning and rebellious is that they came into the store not caring about the dress code and breaking rules. "She was a chunky kind, with a good tan." This quote is describing what Sammy see's, he thinks that the girl in the green bikini is hot with a good body color." The one that caught my eye was the first one in with the plaid green two piece." This quote is talking about what the girl is wear that Sammy thinks is hot. This reason connects to my thesis because he is talking about how he thinks the girl in the plaid green two piece is hot and has a good tan. Sammy admired the way the girls looked and were dressed, but Lengel didn’t, He made the girls leave the store. And, they couldn’t come back till they had more clothing

This fear of the unknown continues throughout the entirety of the story, and readers can infer that the crime the girls have committed was simply dressing out of the norm for their age. The narrator also mentions that she is “white-skinned, ebony-haired, red-lipped, and ethereal,” far different than the expectation for her being “suntanned, golden-haired, peach-lipped, and earthbound” like her mother had been (103). As time repeats itself, so too do the fashion trends popular among the masses, and the look that the narrator’s mother portrayed was the same as the look her daughter is expected to adhere to. This is not the case, though, and because of her and her band’s choices in clothes, the narrator feels ostracized by not only her peers but her father as well, who “looks at [them] without moving his mouth or turning his head” as they leave the house (104). This reaction, or lack thereof, indicates that the father disapproves of the choices his daughter has made about how she dresses, but feels as though it is not his place to criticize her. The ending line does an excellent job at summarizing the angst felt by most teens as the narrator and her band feel as though “[they] are right to turn [themselves] in” to the pressures exerted by their peers to comply to what is expected of them (104).
