My interest in pursuing a doctorate degree in counseling psychology has been influenced by a combination of life experiences and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Though the path which has led me to this destination is complex, the journey has provided me with the clarity and insight necessary to understand human behavior from a holistic perspective. As I approach the completion of my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am faced with the unsettling realization that I have more questions than I do answers. This has fueled my innate desire and motivation to continue challenging myself by attaining a doctorate degree from the University of North Texas. It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment I knew I wanted to become a psychologist because as previously stated, the journey is complex and dates back to my childhood. When I was four years old, my parents adopted my 14 year old cousin after both her parents passed away. Her father died of AIDS while in …show more content…
Over the next two years, I will work towards completing 3,000 hours of post licensure internship while continuing my education in a doctoral program. After completing the doctoral program, I would like to hold dual licensure as a professional counselor and psychologist. In the next 10 years, I would like to work at the collegiate level as an educator in psychology and/or counseling. I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

You have given me my life back, the sentence I still remember from one of my detox patients while I was working at Behavioral Health Care Associates. This was the most satisfactory response that anyone can get while working with patients. That response has strengthened my belief in psychotherapy, counseling and positive conversation in addition to the standard pharmacological treatment methods in the process of transforming a physically and psychologically deranged person into the meaningful person of the society. Now, I strongly believe in the healing power of words that’s why I want to pursue this field as my career. I want to help people and want them to have a constructive, energetic and a happy life. I feel the perfect way to help them

Through exploring various options, both chartered and non-chartered areas in Psychology and Applied Psychology, I came to the conclusion that my area of interest lies in the career path of Counselling Psychology. I believe that pursuing my study through the route of Counselling Psychology would not only enable me to gain deeper understanding on mental health issues, but also the knowledge development in the integration of psychological theory and therapeutic practice.

My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. I am excited to continue my education in the counseling field and become a future Clinical Mental Health Counselor.

Two years after I left school I received my General Education Diploma. I enrolled at Citrus Community College and became the first in my family to receive an associate’s degree.
