French-Canadian singer Celine Dion possesses a voice that is ethereal and crisp as much as it is moving and powerful. Distinctive in its power and charm, the French-Canadian songstress wields a voice that not only transcends time and genre, but her voice, in all its rich, chill-inducing glory, has also helped her etched her presence among the great voices of our era, making her a legend in her own rights. Critic or fan, avid listener or peripheral observer, Celine Dion’s knack for expressing profound emotions through her ethereal yet powerful sound cannot be overlooked. Born on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada, Celine Marie Claudette Dion is the youngest of 14 children to Adhemar and Therese Tanguay Dion. The Dion’s lived a humble …show more content…

She has consistently put out chart topping hits since her debut and have gone on to win 5 Grammys and 7 AMA for her work. Having sold 200 million albums, Dion’s longevity comes from her voice retaining its pristine charm through the years and the fact that her hits and style is still desired in the music industry. Not to mention, soundtrack songs such as “My Heart Will Go On” From Titanic and Beauty and the Beast’s titular song “Beauty and the Beast” have made her a household name. For my second performance, I’ve chosen to sing “Just Walk Away” (1995). It is a bonus track from Celine Dion’s third studio album, The Colour of my Love (1993), and the unofficial seventh single from the album. Celine admitted once before a performance that “love is the perfect thing to sing about because of the emotion it brings.” The final song from the The Colour of My Love album may have been subtly referencing how she’d fallen in love with her manager Rene Angelil. Although not as well-known as her other hits, “Just Walk Away” still highlights Dion’s stylistic flair as it features her clean runs and climactic vocal belts. Celine has also admitted that songwriters love to send her love songs to sing, so perhaps the songwriter of “Just Walk Away” Albert Hammond simply believed Celine was the best to capture the complexities in this love …show more content…

The song displays a somberness that is achieved through smooth legato phrasing and minor key changes. She’s delicate at first and climactically gets stronger and louder. The chorus is a mixture of powerful chest voice and refrained mixed voice. Her vocal runs are tasteful and spread apart and she artistically ends one line with a breathy sound that shows the vulnerability of the character she portrays within this song. The song is laden with a lot of emotion which Celine skillfully shows through her powerhouse vocals. A close reading of the lyrics reveals the tragic narrative in the song. “Just Walk Away” seems to follow a woman forced to say goodbye to her true love. The conflict intensifies when she admits that this man, whom she loves deeply, offers her a love she’s never felt before. This love though profound is also a forbidden love, one she must dutifully walk away from and forget. It isn’t made clear why this love is forbidden, but from the vulnerability and desperation in Dion’s voice, we can infer that this love was a love not approved by an outside party. I did not choose this song for its lyrics as I do not relate to the lyrics. I do find the narrative in this song enticing. It’s like a compelling Hollywood film. I chose this song because I grew up listening to Celine Dion, and have always been drawn to her voice, vocal technique,
