Being a great teacher is understanding that you’re always learning and ready to adapt to the needs of your students. “Becoming a teacher is a journey, after all-one in which you’re always learning (Michie).” The best things I took away from this class were the group discussions which always turned out to be full of information and learning from each other. This is a great resource, especially as new teachers. I also enjoyed writing journals on classroom situations, because I was able to do additional research into the situations and learn from them. One of my classroom learning events was when Molly came in as a new student. She is a full Spanish speaking student so she wasn’t able to fully communicate in the classroom. “According to Dewey there is no way to learn other than to experience the consequences of an action; you children must have the right to make mistakes without the loss of self-esteem (Seefeldt, Castle & Felconer).” I have learned that it’s great to have students participate in making classroom rules so that they are a part of this process from class. I’m not sure if the students had that opportunity, but I know that I want to make that happen in my classroom. The students in this classroom recite their classroom rules every morning after the pledge. In class we discussed factors that can cause children to demonstrate challenging behaviors. Things such as emotional, family, school, physical, learning challenges and environment. Understanding that many things can affect our students and their ability to learn will help us be good teachers. Once students learn there will be consequences for misbehavior, they usually come around (Foley).” I feel and have learned that students succeed better knowing what their expectations are in the classroom. During classroom discussions we’ve all shared classroom technique ideas we’ve seen or used. “Holding one hand in the air, and making eye contact with students is a great way to quite the class and get their attention on you (Alber).” I’ve seen teachers also shut the lights off. Waiting for students to give you their attention is more appropriate and important than raising your voice. Students will mirror your voice level. “Give praise to the entire class as frequently as possible (Teacher Vision).” I feel classroom management will come with more and more classroom experience and I hope to gain more from my cooperating teacher with the time I have in the classroom with her. Working with Jenn in class to create a project based learning lesson was a great experience. I was able to learn ideas from her in her lessons to use in class. We were able to see how similar our teaching philosophies were, which was nice to see that someone else had the thoughts and passion to be a touching teacher like I do. Learning from each other and how to adapt lessons and encourage students helps to take new ideas and save them for when I’m
