Assessments in the classroom are ongoing. Assessments are important for teaching in the classroom and for assisting in continuing the learning process of the students. Three purposes of assessment are to measure the amount of information a student has learned and retained, identify a students’ learning needs in and outside the classroom, and gather evidence to help increase learning for the students.
Assessments need to be reliable and valid, meaning that in order for information obtained by assessments to be useful, the assessments need to meet certain requirements. Reliability means that assessments need to be consistent. You can make an assessment reliable by giving different forms of the same test. Right as the class began the teacher had all the students separate just as if they were taking a major exam. The quiz consisted of ten questions, a few were multiple choice, a few were fill in the blanks and the rest were short answer questions. The students were given half the period to finish the quiz before they would begin lecture. The teacher explained to me that she uses this sort of an assessment because it lets her know what the students are struggling with before an exam without making a huge impact on their current grade. The teacher had noticed a trend in her exam on a particular question that a lot of students had got incorrect. She took out a few minutes at the beginning of class to go over the question. She started out asking the students what they thought the correct answer was and why. She than gave the students the correct answer and then briefly explained why their answers were incorrect. The teacher says she uses this type of assessment to adjust future lectures, so that she knows to spend a little more time on that particular area to make sure student comprehend the
