By the 1850's, a new inspiration came from the "Rococo Revival." This was a more "romantic form (Sometimes More is More). " It was characterized by "swirling lines, natural motifs like fruit and flowers, and dark woods like mahogany, rosewood and black walnut (Sometimes More is More)." The design came from France and included the use of not so dark wood and looked more natural. The Rococo Revival ended around 1870.
“The earliest sofas apparently were made in Philadelphia, which fifty years before the Declaration of Independence.” However, our first look at sofa design that really represents American as a new nation beings with the American Federal style. Now that the country was no longer under the rule of England, the style was make better of the “luxurious and pompous scale of living that mirrored London.” With this in mind certain features were taken and replicated such as rich wood colors like mahogany. According to The Story of American Furniture, sofas were made with walnut cabriole feet and legs with a back that was a “cyma curve higher at the center than at the ends, and the arms flared outward like those of a wing chair.”
The setting of the story takes place in the Mallards house. It seems to me that the house is old and very comfortable. I think this because after Mrs. Mallard finds out about her husband’s death she goes to her room and the narrator says “There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank.”(157) This shows that the furniture is old and worn because most furniture takes a while before it can be worn is so when sat on it will sink in.
Because classical antiquity was revived during the Italian Renaissance, the practitioners of art and design developed new techniques for developing a structure and paved the way for future designers. Modern interior design practitioners borrow many ideas from these Italian pioneers of art and culture, such as high ceilings, ornate floors, and fresco painted walls, which are design techniques indicative of the Italian Renaissance period (Houzz.com, 2012). Being that each room should coincide with the taste and style of the resident and the cultural norms in the society, designers and architects led the way for a new era where proportion and design of the room were unified as a whole. Pieces of art and furniture of the Italian Renaissance, like the Cassapanca, would be used by artisans of the interior for many decades to come.
Woodworking has been around for millennia or more. People have used wood for building shelter, tools, and other useful things. There are many different kinds of woodworking. The most common today are marquetry and parquetry, which are both forms of veneering and caring. There are many different styles of woodworking all of which are a very impressive art form.
In conclusion, the walls and ceilings are relatively consistent throughout the subsequent periods. Wood paneling, gilding, painting, and tapestries were the most popular wall applications. Gilded, carved, and plaster ceilings were the most prominently used during the periods. Craftsmanship was emphasized, and there was an overall lightness of design, especially in comparison to comparative English periods. Walls and ceilings were a vital part of the design, because these areas were the most emphatic areas of the room. Furniture was important but lackluster when contrasted by the gorgeous delineation of forms surrounded the rooms. Perhaps the greatest takeaway from these periods is the emphasis on the seventh plane, something so minutely considered in modern times.

Originally, the postwar boom helped drive the furniture industry’s change. World War II drained the life out of many households, and newer innovative changes were sought by many. The tradition of handing down furniture from generation to generation was quickly disappearing in most households. IKEA helped shape the postwar household by offering new furniture styles at a very reasonable price. With low costs came a new innovative style and a comfortable atmosphere to shop in.
Interior design is a complicated profession. It is sometimes referred to as interior architecture and often confused with interior decorating. It involves the design, organization and planning of an interior structure rather than just refinishing and furnishing existing interior spaces. It involves managing a business, hopefully meeting the desires of the client and delivering to them an interior environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. There is a lot more to interior design than first meets the eye.

Everyone has their own, personal place to have alone time and clear their heads. For me, that place is my bedroom in my apartment. My room is the one place where I feel most nostalgic and comfortable; its’ a comfort that can’t be replaced. My bedroom is my favorite room in my apartment because I always have my privacy there, and I feel like it shows my personal style, which I love.
