Pretend that you are class president. One day, you and your best friend since kindergarten have a huge fight, so as revenge, he releases one of your deepest, darkest secrets out into the world. The secret passes on all around and soon the whole school knows. Now it is too late to try and fix this because dark secrets are hard to forget. Ultimately, this causes all your peers to look at you in a different and bad way resulting in your reputation being ruined. You probably won’t be voted for class president ever again. This situation proves that “What you don’t know can’t hurt you,” is not always true and can do the exact opposite and cause destruction. William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies shows that ignorance can become a vicious monster and destroy. This can also be seen in many other novels, such as Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 and in everyday life. Golding and Bradbury also provide characters that show knowledge, at times, is a good thing.
One of the characters in The Lord of the Flies who shows that knowledge is important in many situations is Ralph. Knowledge in this book does not necessarily mean intelligence, instead it means awareness. A group of young boys are stranded on an island and there is a group of boys that goes out hunting. Jack, who is the leader of the hunters, is also responsible for keeping the signal fire going. During the time they go hunting, Ralph sees that there is a ship; however, he discovers the fire is out. “Ralph reached inside himself for the worst word he knew. ‘They let the bloody fire go out,’” (Golding 68). He is extremely angry because the fire is not lit when the ship passes by and no one even knows if a ship will pass through ever again. He is aware of their situation and knows the ultim...

...t. The survey showed that 23% of Americans do not believe global warming is happening. This number has risen by 7% since the spring of 2013 (Prigg 2013). If people don’t come to realize this sooner, the earth could be destroyed. First off, global warming is when the atmosphere traps in gases like carbon dioxide which warms the earth. Global warming is happening all around. Ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica are decreasing in mass and the global sea level has rise by 17 cm in the last century (NASA 2013). If people do not see that it is actually happening, the place that has been called home for millions of years will be destroyed. Global warming is not a situation to be ignorant with. In some situations, ignorance is the better choice; however, there are some situations where being ignorant at the wrong time leads to destruction. It all depends on the situation.
