Since the beginning of time there has always been disputes about which people would receive certain freedoms and which people would not. Rights and liberties have been attacked on every side as nations try to maneuver through the opposition. There's a difference between civil rights and civil liberties. Rights are things given to someone because of race, gender, or disability. Liberties are things having to do with the bIll of rights for ex 2nd amendment, freedom of speech, freedom of religion. Rights are things given to citizens in the past based on race, gender, or disability. Liberties are things having to do with the Bill of Rights for example, the right to bear arms, freedom of speech, freedom of religion. In the past, these civil liberties have depended upon civil rights. In 1872, Susan B. Anthony described the government as a, “hateful oligarchy of sex”. (Source E) This truly highlights how in this example technically rights and liberties have been restored, yet due to modern day discrimination we still face issues with them. At certain times it may seem like our nation has mastered handing out rights and liberties but at the simultaneously we have mastered the art of retracting them. This is an issue that Americans will possibly face for the rest of time. In the past young boys were “repeatedly faced with the cruel [irony of watching] other boys [suffer on television],” Martin Luther King Jr wisely spoke. (Source A) Martin Luther King Jr uses pathos in his speech to draw in emotions of the listeners and to convey the real message he is trying to get across. His speech has shown the harsh truth of the unfair treatments happening in our nation as well as the rest of the world. People say that things have changed yet when we look around and soak in everything that is happening we are bombarded with terrorist attacks, racism, and sexism on every side of us. Civil rights have caused social injustice, and civil liberties have tried to bind up those wounds caused by civil rights issues. In some cases those wounds have healed, and obviously some have not. While civil liberty issues of the American past have been restored due to current liberties such as freedoms of speech and voting, specific civil rights have not been resolved in the event of discrimination despite the rights given to every citizen by birth. Some Americans say our nation has changed, and some say it hasn't but it really depends if they are analyzing civil rights or civil liberties, and at what point in time they were given them.
