It seems that every era from ancient times to modern times has engineers playing a strong role in the development of society; they build many structures that identify that culture and time period. Engineers create something out of an idea; they fill a need and fulfill a dream such as a skyscraper that no one thought would ever be possible. “Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been” (Albert Einstein).
Civil engineering is the professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, and construction, and built something like rods, bridge, dam and building. In order to survive, they should be viewed, however, as a new challenge and an opportunity to play a leadership role in shaping the future society. To respond to this challenge, civil engineers will need a solid knowledge of the physical sciences, and a continued eagerness to explore new areas and apply the latest research results. Russell mentions that professional engineering need to come with a new ways, and to think outside the box of traditional in order to overcome this obstacle challenge in the introduction of his “Shaping the Future of the Civil Engineering Profession” (Russell 2013).
In addition, Russell also points out how components like experience, national exam, licensure, and specialty certification play a significant role in the civil engineering profession. These four components are the core thing that makes educators and practitioners has a chance for practicing civil engineering at the professional level, and become a professional engineer.
