America prides itself on being a free country with fair rights for every citizen in the country. Americans that are actively protesting and engaging their community help ensure that the law is constantly being changed in order to account for the changing values in the rights of society. They do this through peaceful assemblies, petitions to the government, and through protest to unjust laws. While peaceful assemblies and petitions are both very important factors in creating a free society, peaceful protest to unfair laws has the most impact in creating a free society. Civil disobedience is where someone purposely and nonviolently violates a law, understanding that they will probably need to face the legal consequences of their actions. Therefore, the term “civil disobedience” cannot be used to avoid getting in trouble because one has to accept the consequences of their actions in order for it to be deemed “civil disobedience”. The reason this kind of protest is so effective in creating a free society is because acts of civil disobedience gives the public an accurate picture of flaws in a law. People are more confident in pushing for change when they know others are not trying to avoid arrest. The Salt March was where Mohandas Gandhi and his followers trekked a long distance to the coastal city of Dandi near the Arabian Sea to make salt, addressing large crowds and recruiting more followers to join in on the march. This event led to a mass wave of civil disobedience all over India that involved millions of Indians.
