The primary purpose of the DCO legislation introduced in Bill C-31 is deterrence; by combating the influx of refugees who are abusing the immigration system by residing in Canada when they are in no immediate danger in their native homeland, it is hoped that the number of false refugee claims will be drastically red...
In order to understand the need for TFWs, it is important to determine just where the workers are being placed and what roles they are filling. A total of 202,510 temporary foreign worker positions existed in 2012, up by about 50,000 from the previous year (Economic and Social Development Canada, 2013). Of those workers, nearly 100,000, or half of th...
Malik tells her audience more about her story whereas the scholars who published the study provide an academic report on their research. In Malik’s article she is describing her immigrant experience in a small town on the east coast. This is a personal experience in a very particular part of Canada. Fitting in would be hard for her to do in any small town, being on the coast, however probably made it more difficult as they are known to be a pretty tight knit conservative society. Connections can be made between the two articles about immigrant experiences finding jobs. From Malik’s story we hear her parents taking months for them to finally find jobs, but she does not give any reasons for this. The scholars go more in depth about this in their report discussing why it was more difficult for them to find jobs. Malik briefly mentioned her education level, but did not talk about it long. For most immigrants however extending their education is not uncommon. In fact the study reports that there are parts of Canada where the percentage of immigrants that go to post secondary schools are higher than some Canadian born residents. These numbers could be slightly off though do to the fact that Canada brings in so many international students, studying just for a year or being a full time student. The study did not only discuss third tier cities like Malik talked about living in Cape Breton, but also looked

The Government of Canada will provide assistance to members of all different cultural group origins to eliminate cultural barriers to full integration in society.

Immigration is of great economic and social benefit to Canada. It’s an important role in developing our economy, and it shapes the nation into a multicultural nation. Immigration is a significant role in building our economy, providing growth in the labor force, making a strong economy, and becoming a multicultural nation.
According to Keeping and Shapiro, “The term ‘global citizenship’ is increasingly heard, especially in Canada, but rarely defined.”(as citied in Block and Friesen, 2012, page 215) I believe if a person who would like to place their own identity with a global community through actions much more than their identity about values and practices, they will become a part of global citizenship. After learning in ELLA 0360 textbooks, there are three people that stand out. They are Dr. Christopher Opio, Lindsay Willms and David Suzuki.
The integration of immigrants in Canada (or any country for that matter) involves integration into three different domains: the social sphere, the economic sphere, and the institutional sphere. (12) Integration into the social sphere refers to immigrants’ ability to create relationships and have social interactions with other Canadians. Integration into the economic sphere refers to immigrants’ ability to enter the labour force and work in jobs that match their qualifications, while integration into the institutional domain refers to immigrants’ ability to become “fully functional citizens, without facing systemic barriers emanating from the structure and functioning of major institutions. A well-integrated immigrant group is one which faces no institutional obstacles, no market disadvantage, and no social isolation.” (12)

Throughout Canada’s relatively short existence we have created quite a reputation for ourselves. Our great nation is known for many things , and I am proud to say that most are positive. Does Canada have a strong national identity? Anyone can see the answer is yes. Just take a look at the facts. For example, we are renowned for our peacekeepers and no other country is considered more peaceful. Without a doubt this is the type of identity we should work to keep.

Social interactions between immigrant newcomers and the community hinge upon the ethnic racial and socioeconomic characteristics of elderly immigrants and the society’s ethnic-racial and class structure. Without a comprehensive policy, elderly immigrant integration shall be a far-reaching goal in the Canada. One of the most fundamental conclusions we can draw from is that elderly immigrants sustain best in socially and politically conducive environments that allow them to practice their values and beliefs or change their social and cultural traditions at their pace, while learning and adapting to important community practices more quickly. Doing so, in turn, allows elderly immigrants to build up their confidence and sense of belonging gradually but profoundly. Cultural differences and practical problems such as language barriers and illiteracy make it rather difficult for these groups to reach health promotion and other social services. A transition is needed towards culturally sensitive services to overcome the obstacles to making convenient for elderly immigrants to assimilate in the society. I propose Culture Sensitive Senior Immigrant Integration Policy (CSSIIP) an integrated enabling services policy in which ethnic culturally competent community workers and the other community elders act as liaisons between immigrant elderly and local social welfare and health promotion services. Similarly, an official Canadian policy of multiculturalism buttresses the cohesion and the sense of community while both the concepts are of concern to most of the immigrant people. Integration is not necessarily a smooth process; it requires uncomfortable adjustments among immigrants and the society in which they

Since Jeremiah and I had only spoken one or two times prior to the interview, he was more reluctant to give me more in depth, personal answers, especially over a Facebook conversation. Jeremiah began by explaining the process in him preparing and entering Canada. He explains “No, not really many steps are required. Only a medical and background check is required when your under 18”. When asked about the barriers that he may of faced he says “I experience barriers a small bit, but the key thing that I would suggest to anyone new in Canada is to listen to how everyone else talks and form your own unique way of speaking from that”.
