Chuck Close is an artist that has had to overcome many health issues in order to paint. Some of his most popular paintings are ‘Big Self-Portrait’ and ‘Fanny/Fingerpainting’. He is also known for painting in more of an abstract way that most people aren't used to.
Chuck Close was born on July 5, 1940 in Monroe, Washington and is currently 75 years old. His parents are Leslie Close and Mildred Close. Chuck Close was born with severe dyslexia which caused him to struggling in school with all of his classes except art. Dyslexia is when someone has difficulties to learn/read and interpret words, letters, and other symbols. Photorealism is when someone makes a large-format polaroid of someone and then re-creates onto a larger canvas. Print is when you transfer ink from one thing to another using a plate and press. The plate is what will transfer the ink onto the paper and the press is something heavy that’s put on top of the paper and plate.Etching is when someone coats metal plates with ground (waxy material) and then draws on it which removes a layer of the ground where you want the ink to be and that makes it the plate. After that the plate is coated with a acid that makes grooves where the ground was removed, the grooves then hold the ink. With etching you make one layer per color you want. Relief paint is when ink is put on a raised surface and the area beneath the surface doesn't print, like a fingerprint. Woodblock print is when wood is used to do relief print. The artist carves into the wood where they don't want the ink to transfer. Something I have learned from Close is that you should never give up on something that you’re passionate about and that you enjoy doing. Something I can take from Close’s art and apply to my own is taking my time with my work and not giving up. Like Chuck Close, I have used the grid method to draw portraits.
