Chuck Berry is known as one of the most influential artists of the rhythm and blues, rock and roll error of music from the 50’s through the 70’s. He is famous for a vast amount of hit records including the hit songs Maybellene My-Ding-A-Ling and Johnny B. Goode. Many music historians considered Berry’s song Maybellne the first true rock and roll song. While undergoing his musical career Berry faced numerous devastating obstacles that could have tragically ended his career. All of Berry’s songs were derived from his adept lyrics and peculiar sounds. Chuck Berry influenced a lot of artists with his amazing talent. A few would include The Beetles, John Doe, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. With all of his success Berry became a very essential figure in the history of Rock and Roll. The song Maybelline had an exclusive blend of rhythm and blues beats along with some country guitar, Chicago blues flavor and narrative storytelling. Maybellene was considered the first rock and roll song. Originally the name of the song was supposed to be “Ida Mae”. The name of the song changed because of Leonard Chess of Chess Records not wanting any confusion with another song with a similar name. The origin of the song Maybellene has different variations of how the song actually came about. Chuck Berry stated that he discovered the name of the song from a cow which was named Maybellene in a children’s nursery rhyme. Chuck Berry’s pianist Johnnie Johnson on the other hand said that the name of the song came from a box of Maybelline Mascara they noticed laying around the office. Once Leonard Chess seen and or heard about that idea he embraced it as the title of the song. Chuck Berry’s dialect in both songs really don’t portray the rock and roll genre of music. In the song Down Bound Train the music kind of makes you feel like you are being chased by something and or someone. Maybellene on the other hand sounds like something you would square dance to. Maybellene and Down Bound Train both incorporate polyrhythmic texture techniques in the songs. Meanings of these two songs vary too. In Down Bound Train Chuck Berry is warning against the alcohol abuse and redemption from doing so. Maybellene on the other hand is a narrative basically telling about a woman who is constantly cheating on her man. Both songs are great songs and share a vast amount of similarities and differences. Chuck Berry has proved to be a huge influence on Rock and Roll.
