Women Confined in Their Minds

The first story to be analyzed The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, this story relates to a woman who has a desire to be free, unfortunately financial circumstances, traditional feminine/masculine roles and fear to move forward take resident in this woman's life. The second story to analyze is The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, in this story the author conveys a story of greed, ignorance, financial inferiority. These negative aspects of the woman life lead her to live a miserable life. The third story to analyze is A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner in this short story the author portrays a woman as a fragile, weak, financially burdened, and stuck in her ways. Elisa lives on a ranch with her husband, He is the financial provider for Elisa and her role is of the traditional housewife. Elisa has a gift of growing flowers, her husband says "Some of those yellow chrysanthemums you had this year were ten inches across. I wish you'd work out in the orchard and raise some apples that big." (John Steinbeck). Emily is a recluse to her house because she did not know what to do after the death of her father with no money or means to support herself. "A week later the mayor wrote her himself, offering to call or to send his car for her, and received in reply a note on paper of an archaic shape, in a thin, flowing calligraphy in faded ink, to the effect that she no longer went out at all. The tax notice was also enclosed, without comment"(William Faulkner). Emily could not pay the taxes on her house and the towns people could not get her to pay it due to the deal her father had with the mayor. Emily is living in her past and cannot investigate the future in her mind. Emily is used to a lifestyle that would no longer exist after the civil war, moreover, after the death of her father. While the world spun around Emily could not fathom the thought of life in the present.
