George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, Germany in early 1685. He died in April of 1759 at the age of 74. By the time he died he was the most renowned musician and composer of his day. Handel which is pronounced Hendle, traveled to Italy to study the construction of Italian opera. George studied at the feet of some of the foremost composers of his day. Vivaldi in particular had a large effect on Handel. Handel led a long and inspiring life. While Handel did not break any molds he was revolutionary for the diversity of his music. He wrote operas in the style of Italy, his other works could be English or German, each with its own individual style. Due to his high rank of employment and long life picking his best work is extremely difficult but his most known work was “The Messiah.” After Italy he went back to Germany, when he could not obtain a job, he moved on to London England. George Frideric Handel was born February 23, 1685 in Halle, Germany, being born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach. His father was 73 years old at the time of his birth. George, at a young age, had a passion for music, but his father wanted him to pursue a career in civil law. George’s father believed that music would not provide a real source of income and he would not even allow his son to own an instrument. Handel’s Messiah is a Baroque-era, awe-inspiring composition; rich with history, profound in meaning, and intensely intimidating when asked to dig deep into its inner workings. When first receiving this assignment, I was overwhelmed by what I was being asked to do. But after analyzing and critiquing the melody, adding figured bass symbols, macro-analyzing the chords, adding roman numerals, and commenting on the voice leading in chords moving in root position, I feel as if I have only scratched the surface of all Handel put into the Messiah. In this paper I will be discussing and critiquing the melody, addressing the effect of consonant and dissonant sounds, commenting on the uncommon motion between root position chords, and observing the aesthetic effect of what Handel did with this part of the Messiah.
Not only is George Frideric Handel's Water Music extraordinarily beautiful, it also helped to establish the orchestral suite as a legitimate art form. Written to be performed outside instead of in a theater, it remains one of the most outstanding compositions in Handel's catalogue. Even though it is somewhat overplayed, the Water Music continues to be a very popular work of art. By nature of the venue this great work was to be performed in, Handel had to be very original in orchestration. Hard work and preservation through even the darkest of days led to hundreds of works of musical art by Handel. Through his knowledge of many musical styles from Germany, Italy, and England, Handel rose to greatness and became a well-known artist of his time, despite adversity.
Antonio Vivaldi was born on March 4th, 1678, in Venice, Italy, and died on July 28, 1741, in Vienna, Austria. His father, a barber and a talented violinist at Saint Mark's Cathedral himself, had helped him in trying a career in music and made him enter the Cappella di San Marco orchestra, where he was an appreciated violinist.
George was a very talented composer but, unlike many others he didn’t come from a family with a long line of musicians. At very early age Handel had his mind set on studying music even though his father disapproved. Because his father wanted him to become a lawyer he didn’t allow Handel to play musical instruments. Despite his father’s wishes, historians believed he studied music by candlelight. To make his father proud he studied law for a short time but knew this was not what he wanted to do. George followed his dreamed and went on to join an orchestra in Germany that would change his life forever.
His work demonstrated the intellectuality of his conceptions. His compositions were monumental. His work encapsulated a high degree of naturalism.
