College is the first major step towards the outside world for many people. As a result, many have the same idea, get a 4-year degree in an area they want and then get a job based on that. However, many don't realize the alternatives after leaving high school. These alternatives provide great benefits and are choices an increasing amount of people are beginning to take. Deciding to not go to college is blasphemy to today's society and this thought process is embedded in everyone's mind. Yet, the choices people are making by avoiding college can be beneficial, as people don't have to endure college if they hate it, and vocational training proving an effective alternative, people can find themselves in a better financial situation. College, despite often being shown as a great dream place where successful people are made, is not designed for everyone. Because of that image many people paint about college, children have those thoughts pushed into their minds that they need to go to college. But for many, they don't want to go for a multitude of reasons and as a result, it is often said that, "we are forcing hundreds of thousands of kids to go to college and they clearly do not want to be there"(Rubiner). Many kids don't feel comfortable leaving home, possibly moving to another state, surrounded by people they have never seen before, causing them to feel homesick. In addition to this, they have to make brand new friends since they no longer have their old ones, and have no family to rely on to help them. On top of just these social problems, the college education system could be very different from the schooling they were used to. Between having larger classes reaching over 50 students per class and having to learn a completely brand ... ... middle of paper ... ... lead to making money, which in turn leads to a much better financial situation. In conclusion, college isn't as mandatory as it once was thought to be. People who may not like college now have other options, such as vocational training, which could allow them to become the financially stable adults they want to be. As part of the future, people now have options and choices in what they want to do and how they want to go about doing it. No longer is going to a big, prestigious university mandatory to become an even remotely successful person. Methods such as vocational training will more than likely become more popular, especially with companies like Cedefop helping push VET and allowing people to either have a second chance or a different way of approaching how to get a job in the modern society. This is but one of the ways society will be changing in the future.
Every single individual has once heard the words “get good grades, go to a good college and graduate, in order to get a good job and succeed in life.” However, no one can really assure that a student with a degree is going to have a better future than those who do not attend college. Lawrence B. Schlack, a retired superintendent, asserts in his article “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” that college is not the only place to go after graduating from high school. By using different kinds of persuasive techniques the author effectively supports his claim and makes the article an understandable and important tool for both parents and students who believe that college is their mandatory option after high school.
College is an experience of a lifetime . It's very expensive so for most they do not get the opportunity .They do not get the opportunity to get a higher education . Without a higher education most people can not receive a good well paying job . Now most of the United States attends or have graduated college . Which makes it hard for everyone to have a well paying job .
Over the past years, getting a college degree has been the pathway to a settled career. College has been a reason for people to carry on after high school. Now that tuition has been raised, getting a degree seems to drain students with more loans and could be in debt. College has been raised to the point where people rather start working at a minimum wage than continuing with school. The main reason why people go to college is not because they want to but because they have to. Most high school seniors are pressured by their guidance counselors and parents to go to college because it is "the right thing to do." In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote "College is a Waste of Time and Money", she states that students go to college because " . . . Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized." (481) The student may have different ideas about what he or she wants to do in life, but because they think that these "mentors" know what is best for them, they probably end up doing something they do not want to do, resulting in being miserable and resentful.
Caroline Bird writes the statement in her 1975 article “The Case Against College (Bird 15-18)” that not every high school graduate is ready to attend college. It is 2010 and this article is still valid today. Some of the college students I have been around were not mature enough for obedience school let alone college. A few of the points she makes in the article are: College has never worked its magic for everyone. Does it make you a better person? Are colleges responsible for your children? Are my children living in a country club? First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. Charles Murray, the author of “What’s Wrong With Vocational School?” discusses how too many of today’s high school graduates wrongfully head off to a four-year college. For a large majority of the population, a college education is unnecessary. Murray says that a lot of students don’t even want an advanced education. Even if they do want an education, they aren’t qualified for it. Additionally, a large number of these students are striving for an education or experience that a four-year college isn’t meant to fulfill.

Individuals in my generation that decide to go away for college may graduate with a degree, but they also graduate with debt and have a hard time finding work in their area of study. College graduates are young, and many may not have much experience in their field. It is a bittersweet option to go to college and further your education, I am all for it, but I am not for getting yourself in tons of debt, that will cause you to live your whole life paying off student loans and such. Which is one of the reasons why I chose to stay at home and go to community college, I’m saving money while still getting a great education.
