Fearful Flaw Okonkwo is the protagonist of Chinua Achebe’s story, Things Fall Apart. He has a calamitous flaw that dominates his life. His fear of failure and of weakness causes him to take unnecessary and destructive actions. His fear of weakness leads him to be emotionally distant from his children, beat his wives, kill Ikemefuna whom he loved, and the Commissioners messenger. His fear of failure causes him to disown his oldest son who did not meet his expectations, become well than his idle father, makes a comeback after exile, and keeps his property in check. Okonkwo needs his home, Umuofia to be untouched since its structure and system were measures that gave him worth and meaning in his life. He obligated to this purpose because his childhood and farfetched relationship with his father were one of the roots of his fears and drive for success. As unknown white men came to spread Christianity, Umuofia’s structure changes, Okonkwo was unable to have the life that he was determined to live and could not survive in the new environment which he believed collapsed. Okonkwo despised his father, Unoka, who was an agbala (woman/ no title), did not support the family and owed large amounts of debts. His father was not given respect from other men, which caused him to grow fear and embarrassment. His fear of becoming a failure caused Okonkwo to become an ambitious man who spoke through his fists and rose from nothing into a man who has great importance in his tribe. Okonkwo worked diligently to gain a reputation of high status. “Age was respected among his people, but achievement was revered” on page 5 Although he was still young, he became a wealthy farmer with two barns full of yams, three wives, won fame as the greatest wrestler in... ... middle of paper ... ...ed Nowye to follow his cultural traditions. Okonkwo disowns his son because he is afraid he will bring more grief to him and then turns to his youngest sons to become head of the family when they grow older. When Okonkwo returns, Umuofias people were not the same people who used to fight back to solve problems but are now people who think and talk to resolve problems. Okonkwo does not want to become “weak”; he wants to fight against the Christian Catholic Church. When a few messengers came to deliver a message from the Commissioner, he kills one of the messengers. It shows that Okonkwo was not able to control the events of the new ways of Umuofia that were too different from the way of his youth. He was afraid of becoming weak so he committed suicide. Although it was against tradition, Okonkwo did one last thing his father would have never thought of doing.
