Chicago is full of dope dips of diversity across the city. Smack dab in the middle of the south side is Hyde Park. Hyde Park is a community full of students, residents, and commuters. Businesses are lined and stacked up and down 53rd street. The historic neighborhood is full of fine dining, dope retail shops, and Yusho. Yusho is a Japanese grill, that cooks and creates dishes from all around the world. On this day, Hyde Park was busy as usual. People coming and going from left to right. Making her way through the rushy crowd was Chicago Hip Hop artist Chin Chilla Meek. Meek bounced and bopped her way to Yusho to dine and discuss with Whatupwindy. In Chicago, Chin Chilla Meek is well respected and recognized. Her precise bars and dope flow landed her on MTV as a “Sucka Free Chicago Artist”. The “Harvey World” rapper is a wizard with the pen. Upon reading your responses, I can see how individuals are labeled based on race and on stereotypes. In the film, “Boyz n the Hood”, I agree to what Sabrina said about the two scenes expressing discriminatory treatment by the criminal justice system. It was sad to see how when you are in need of help and the only source is turning their backs. It is not fair to be judged by your ethnicity, class, or where you live. This is related to labeling theorist, Howard Becker; whereas he states that certain individuals can even be labeled by being falsely accused. An individual can be labeled as a deviant, because of their race and yet never committed a crime (Adler, Mueller, & Laufer 2013, p. 189). The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (2011) is a 1 hour and 40 minute documentary that observes the black power movement in American history. This film is directed by Swedish director Goran Hugo Olson and has detailed footage that was shot during the 1960s and 1970s by Swedish journalists. The footage largely focuses on the black power movements. The film allows viewers to not only grasp a better understanding of this movement but allows us to understand why this movement appealed to Swedish journalists. The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 includes vintage interviews with Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, and other prominent leaders during the Black Power Movement. The Chinatown neighborhood has many gift stores, cosmetics stores, ice cream stores, and bakery. Many visitors came to the Chinatown neighborhood to visit the neighborhood and try the Chinese foods because it has the authentic Chinese food in the Chinese restaurants. He may just seem like another rapper to you but if you actually listen to his lyrics you can see he’s not like any rapper out there. His name is Kanye West and he was born in Chicago Illinois. He grew up in the “ghetto” and learned to appreciate life. He didn’t learn to really, truly appreciate life until October of 2002. Driving back to his hotel late one night after a recording session, the new-coming rap/hip-hop artist was involved in a devastating, near fatal car accident. The crash left him with a broken jaw in three places and an appreciation for life. Just weeks after being released from the hospital he recorded his first major hit, “Through the Wire,” with his mouth still wired shut. He records every song like its going to be his last song and that makes every song better than the last. He’s not only a rap artist but also a producer. He has been responsible for being behind songs like Jay-Z’s Izzo, Girls, Girls, Girls, The Takeover, and 03 Bonnie and Clyde.
Exploding onto the rap scene, Puffy soon found himself engulfed by the lifestyle of a rapper. For a short time, Puff Daddy was involved in one of the biggest East Coast vs. West Coast battles. Violence erupted, which lead to the death of two rappers: 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. During this whole time, Puffy was busy producing music and influencing the style of other artists.[I2] Biggie’s single “Hypnotize” soared up to number one and stayed there long after his death. Kanye West has been an icon in American hip-hop culture for over a decade. His music, fashion line, producing skills, and flamboyant personality has influenced many people for generations to come. Coming out of Chicago, many people in the music industry didn't even think Kanye had a chance to become a figure in hip-hop, but his hard work and persistence paid off. Kanye started off his music career as a producer. He produced music for the likes of major artists such as Common and Jay-Z. His first major breakthrough came from producing Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint”— which is certified 2x platinum. Kanye believed he could be a successful rapper as well, but music executives didn't believe he had it in him. That all changed when Roc-A-Fella records signed Kanye to their label, and gave him a chance to shine as a rapper. Kanye’s background, critical analysis, and importance all shows that he has become one of the most important characters in American hip-hop culture to this day.
As hip hop culture became prevalent in pop culture, so did black culture. Hip hop stems from black struggle. Their vernacular, songs, and spiritual ways were different from what whites were used to. Their different lifestyle of “living on the edge” was intriguing yet inaccessible for the whites living among them. Thus, this initiated America’s fascination with the culture. The movie ‘From Mambo to Hip-Hop’ is a great documentary about a revolution in the entertainment industry. It talks of evolution on Salsa music and Hip-Hop culture in suburbs of New York. South Bronx is a ghetto neighbourhood. The people living in the area are challenged economically. There is a record of high cases of violence that exist in the streets due to high crime rate and drugs being traded as a means of survival (Gordon, 2005). Most of the people living in the area are descendants of African immigrants who could trace their origin in the Caribbean islands with a large number Latin American population too.

The Oriental institute Museum is part of the university of chicago, a research facility Opposed to a teaching facility such as Wright college, the university is located in one of the most upcoming areas, also given one of many best chicago neighborhood development awards. This would explain why Hyde Park was a back drop for the presidential election bringing forth one of the most loved and revered presidents, President Barack Obama. Prior to my mandatory trip to this side of chicago I was unaware of such a neighborhood existing on the south side. I've always stayed away from that side of the city due to a cultural bias, uninformed decision influenced throughout the knowledge attained from mass media. ( i.e. the news) Thankfully due to this mandatory visit to the museum I am now aware of a neighborhood I can safely travel to and utilize for its wealth of historical museums and information.
Lamar has been successfully achieving his dream by rapping about the stress and difficult situations he has encountered but strongly claims that we will all be alright in his song, “Alright.” He released a song called “i” that reflects how violence has increased in the cities and how he wishes everyone should love each other as humans. His last song on “To Pimp A Butterfly” called “Mortal Man” he states “only because you don’t wear the same color as mine, that doesn’t mean I can’t respect you as a human being.” He clearly states how he understands the reputations of other gang members may seem important but should all still respect others as people.
