Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Speech: We Should All Be Feminists

“Feminists are unhappy women, who can’t find husbands.” A journalist said to Adichie. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie at one point didn’t even know what it meant and now goes around the world giving a TEDxTalk called “We Should All Be Feminists.” Feminists are stereotyped to be all about women, and anti-men. The world is filled with assorts of people that stereotyping is the way go to, especially if you’re not interested in the topic. Adichie persuades the audience by showing feminism is not anti-men, that women can be just as equal to men and women become who they are because of how they were raised to be.

Since day one of society, men are the ones who make the money and support the family while, the woman are known to be housewives. Not every woman is lucky to have a man to support them. Women are capable to put aside the housewife’s duties and take in the hands of man 's job to put money on the table. Adichie mentions a past event when a man helped her friend Louie and her find a parking space. Though on her way out she thought she’d courteously tip. Once she handed the money he directly said thank you to Louie as “knowingly” it’s his money. Adichie was an independent woman that could support herself in which he lacked of considering. He lacked knowing due to Adichie being with the man and also shows how he was grown to know that no women should never make their own money. “A man is as likely as a woman to be intelligent, to be creative, to be innovative. We have evolved; but it seems to me that our ideas of gender have not evolved.” Adichie says. Gender will always be stereotypical physically and mentally. Other incidents that have occurred was when she walked into a hotel alone is automatically assumed a sex worker or when she can’t go alone into a bar or club because is not accompanied by a man. Women do have it harder than men and they can not see that because they’ve always had it easy. Women are imposed on impressing the men to eventually pursue marriage. “We teach girls shame. “Close your legs. Cover yourself. “We make them feel as though being born female they’re already guilty of something. And so, girls grow up to be women who cannot say they have desire.” Adichie says. Throughout generations girls were taught to do certain things and be a girl in certain ways because without a man (a marriage) you won’t have anything. For example, a woman sold her house because she didn’t want to intimidate a man who would want to marry her or a woman who wears a fake wedding ring so she would be respected in a big crowd. Adiche mentions if a man were to be intimidated by her, she would have no interest in the guy. Though that is not what’s taught to young woman because then it would be “emasculating” the man. Over time that evolved and women don’t have to prove themselves to men but to be themselves for themselves. They don’t have to wear high heels for men but because they like to wear them. Although, women have been frowned upon left and right they managed to overcome and be the woman they deserved to be.
