Childhood obesity is a serious epidemic on the rise in our American youth. Over the past twenty years, obesity among children who were at the age from six to eleven has doubled as well as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Among young people from ages twelve to nineteen, it has more than tripled. As the years go by there the alarming rate continues to grow rapidly, with no signs of change. With that being said, this is leading to a much more serious problem for American citizens of the future.(1) It is essential that children, as well as parents become aware of the health risk that come with the dangers of obesity, in order to sustain a healthier lifestyle.

It is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starch, and other materials from food into energy. Through the mist of terrible disease, there has not been a cure made. Diabetes has many symptoms. Although diabetes is a serious threat, the symptoms may seem some what harmless. With this being a factor, many cases of diabetes go undiagnosed. If you are diagnosed in the early stages of diabetes, you can receive treatment that can reduce the complications of this disease. The Cause of this disease is still a mystery to be solved. Through research genetics, obesity, and lack of exercise have come to play a role. (4)

Type two diabetes may occur in all races and ages, but some types are more prone to get it than others. We get many benefits from them that our body needs.(5) Children are facing difficult times trying to eat fruits and vegetable like they should, due to the wide variety of snack foods. People of all ages would rather eat salty sugary foods over healthy foods. This habit leads to obesity. Nutrition is the blame. Kids are more likely to eat vegetables and fruits if they find something they like. Popsicles can become healthy alternative for your child if you make them out of homemade natural juices. Instead of letting your children eat the same fried snacks find foods such as vegetables with low fat dip. Another healthy alternative snack that kids may like is dried fruits. Dried fruits will help reduce the urge for fatty sweets. Other foods such as trail mix, grapes, fruits smoothies, and baked potatoes chips would be great alternatives. If children can develop themselves to eat these items on a regular basis, they can reduce their chances of obesity.
In conclusion, child obesity can lead to a series a of problematic disease.

B.(Sub-point) Type-2 diabetes after a long time can affect the body’s blood vessels leading to damage to both small and big vessels just like Type 1 diabetes. (SUB-SUBPOINT) Damage to the small blood vessel leads to microvascular problems, while harm to the large vessels result in macrovascular effects (Lisa, 2016). Impaired blood vessels do not transfer blood as supposed to, which results in other complications, like vision loss, kidney damage and nerve damage. Macrovascular problems with Type 2 diabetes are a buildup of plaque, which results in a heart attack, blocked vessels in legs and a stroke (Lisa, 2016). Type 1 diabetes has the same complications as Type 2 resulting in the same effect on the important organs in the body, like the heart, nerves, vision, kidneys and both the tiny and large blood vessels ( Mayo Clinic Staff,
In order to impede the epidemic of childhood obesity, the actual causes of the problem need to be evaluated and dissected. Obesity in children is becoming a huge problem in American society. In the past three decades, the rate of overweight children has increased by 300%. This is an alarming rate that is only climbing higher. Every member in society should take steps to becoming healthier. This would help the present generations as well as future generations to come. The lifestyle of Americans keeps us too busy to be a healthy society.
Glucose is a sugar that plays a big part in a human’s health and well-being. This sugar is a major source of energy for the body’s brain and cells. The Cells that receive energy from glucose help in the building of the body’s muscle and tissue. Although glucose may be important to the body too much of this sugar can cause a chronic condition called Diabetes. Diabetes, also known as Diabetes mellitus, is a chronic condition that is caused by too much sugar in the blood. This condition can affect all age groups. In fact, in 2010 a survey was taken by the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, on the number of newly diagnosed diabetes. Out of 1,907,000 people: 24.38% were ages 20-44, 55.17% were ages 45-64, and 20.45% were ages 65 and greater. Diabetes is a very serious condition, and it can be deadly if left untreated. This paper will help better educate the reader on the signs and symptoms, the testing process, and the management of diabetes.
So I try at dinner but all I get are sour faces and turning of heads when they are offered vegetables. I talked to the kids’ pediatrician about this and he told me that 9 out of 10 kids don’t make the daily requirement as far as eating enough veggies, i.e. the number recommended to get their required daily requirements. Although this made me feel good that I wasn’t doing worse than anyone else I was still worried about them. He also told me that tomatoes (aren’t they fruit?)
Americans eat entirely too much. And the foods we are consuming are not at all healthy, they contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, carbohydrates, etc. This over eating is not only a severe problem in the adult population but also in America’s children as well. Results from a study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 1 to 2 year olds get 30 percent more of the 950 calories they require a day. It has also been found that another contributing factor to most children’s bad eating habits is the fact that they either rarely or never consume vegetables and fruit. Besides the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables children are consuming large amounts of sugar. Wether it be in candy or desserts, soda or sugary fruit juices children are beginning to consume these at very early ages. Results from another study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that infants are drinking soda out of baby bottles as early as 7 months of age. In response to these disturbing facts Parents magazine published the preceding article. It outlines 10 steps that can be taken to
Forty years ago in America childhood obesity was rarely a topic of conversation. A survey done in the early 1970s showed that 6.1% of children between the ages 12 and 19 were overweight. Eight years later the same survey was done and 17.4% were considered overweight (Iannelli). “Childhood obesity epidemic in America is now a confirmed fact since the number of overweight or obese children has more than tripled during the last 30 years” (Childhood Obesity Epidemic). “Over the last 20 years, the prevalence of obesity in children aged 6 to 11 years has tripled from 6.5% to 19.6%” (Childhood Obesity Epidemic). As a nation statistics should be alarming. Why are American children today so obese?
In addition, sugar considered to be the cause of organs failure due to its association with cardiovascular disease. This is evident through the research conducted by Mayo Clinic Staff stated that “Cardiovascular disease can refer to different heart or blood vessel problems, meaning damage to your heart or blood vessels by buildup of fatty plaques in your arteries. Plaque thickens and stiffens artery walls, which can inhibit blood flow through your arteries to your organs and tissues” (staff). This shows generally when the blood sugar are elevated, the blood vessels become narrow and block to allow any circulation. Therefore, increase your risk of heart disease by blood from entering into the heart. Above all sugar is the leading cause of organs failure in early childhood obesity because of the simple fact that it causes internal body diseases and its contribution to cardiovascular
Recently, there has been a federal law change that says schools must provide a drink, whether it is milk or juice, and a larger portion of fruits or vegetables for after-school programs as well as before and during school hours. Milk and juice provide greater nutrient intakes as well as vitamins (4). Milk, in particular, provides a significant amount of calcium and helps build strong bones and teeth. Likewise, larger portions of vegetables and fruits give children vitamins, minerals and fiber that will keep them energized throughout the day (4).
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) about “17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese” (Moreno et al., 2013 P.157). “Surveys administered in 1976-1980 and 2007-2008 show that the prevalence of obesity has changed from 6.5% to 19.6% among children 6-11 years old age and from 5.0% to 18.1% for those aged 12-19 years (Moreno et al., 2013 P.157).
There are two types of diabetes. One is a type 1 diabetes and the other one is a type 2 diabetes.
And sadly, doctors still aren't sure what causes the disease, though they know estrogen plays a role.
When handling food it is important to note to avoid certain foods, as they could be a choking hazard for the children. Whole grapes, hard candy, nuts, seeds are to name a few a couple of foods which should be avoided. When handling the proper nutrition it is important to include: Dairy, Grains, Fruits and vegetables, and Meats. Two to two and a half cups of milk should be offered thru out the day. Half a banana or ½ a cup of fruit should be offered as a snack during the day. Steamed broccoli and or carrots should be included also, the serving size of 1 ½ to 2 cups of vegetables. Breakfast is a good time to offer the child their servings of grains; oatmeal, cereal, and a bagel are a few examples of what to give the child. The last part of their meal which should also be included daily is the protein consisting of chicken, beef, or ham preferably the serving size should be 3-5
I believe that parents, caregivers, or anyone that has contact with a toddler should know about what nutrition they need and why local produce is better for the toddler. I choose toddler’s nutrition because in psychology class, we are studying their development, so something as simple as what fruits and vegetables they eat can affect all points throughout the toddler’s life. In addition, my sister is pregnant so as the aunt of the child, I feel I have the responsibility in helping my younger sister and teaching her nutrition for her baby. After researching, I know that feeding local produce to my niece or nephew when they become toddlers is vital and can, enhance their development. So let’s learn about toddle...
One of the chief causes is unhealthy diets. On one hand, there are high-calorie foods in daily diets like chocolates, sugar, cheese and butter. Teenagers eat more and more high-fat burgers and pizza in fast food restaurants. For example, according to Altman and Leitch (2012), in Mexico, students drink cola rather than water due to the short of hygienic drinking water. Coca cola made agreements with many schools that they would exclusively sell Coca cola inside the schools. Therefore, Mexicans are considering being the most obese country which will have 70% overweight people including 30% obsess in the future. (Altman and Leitch,2012). The foods most commonly eaten by over 80% of kids are white bread, savoury snacks, chips, biscuits and chocolate confectionery. Besides, almost 20% kids do not eat any fruit at all. In general, kids eat about half the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. On the other hand, some people judge traditional food healthier; however, some traditional foods are extremely oily as well. For example, Chinese pay attention to use oil to heat the ingredients quickly. This makes the food fairly oily and high-fat. Furthermore, diets today are changing according to ...
