There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. Child welfare is my primary target when I become a social worker. I feel that I will have the biggest impact if I help the kids out that will be creating our future world. If I can help the kids of the next generation then maybe my influence will help more than just those few kids I see every day. Plus ever since I can remember people told me I need to be doing a job that helps children. I want to be able to make a difference in the community, and if I can help the kids, then I know I’ll be helping the community. Being a student at Wilmington College will help me fulfill these values and skills, but the thing that …show more content…
It is also in many other countries, especially in the impoverished countries. I know as a child welfare specialist that if I want to become a social worker in a foreign country, there would be a need for me. The one country that has the biggest poverty rate which leads to child welfare/social work in Africa. “Nearly two-thirds of the population in Africa lives in extreme poverty, on less than US$1 per day (UNDP, 2005). Extended families and communities that are already chronically poor and food insecure are additionally challenged by the newest risk, the HIV⁄AIDS pandemic” (Gabel, Gatenio, and Kamerman, Pg.11). As you can see poverty is very high in Africa. Africa cannot support the need for social workers. “Most African nations do not have national social protection schemes. They lack the financial resources and management capacities required to meet the social protection needs of all their citizens and poverty. The African Union has no strategy specifically related to social protection, although some its plans of action and declarations call for support and financial assistance to marginalized and vulnerable groups” (Gabel, Gatenio, and Kamerman,
The basis of this assignment was to create a further and more in depth understanding of my chosen field, social work. Social workers aid and support individuals, groups, and communities through difficult times and ensure that vulnerable people are safeguarded from harm. Without them our nation would not have the proper support to establish order and relations in society. I explored the numerous types of social working jobs, ranging from Child, Family, and School social workers, Mental Health and Substance Abuse social workers, to social workers in Administration, Policy, and Research. I provided all of the educational requirements necessary to become a social worker, along with the benefits of acquiring a higher degree. In addition, I included the average salary of an entry level social worker and the average salary for a social worker with a Master’s degree or other professional licensure. I provided all essential information one would need to know before entering the field of social work. For example, what the job requires beyond what you can learn in a classroom. Patience, understanding and empathy are a few of the many imperative personality traits a social work must possess. Along with the facts and statistics I incorporated into my paper, I also included a personal section explaining why I chose to enter this field.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
The profession of Social Work or any other Psychological based profession is very difficult and very drowning emotionally, physically, and even spiritually. Being able to not put your own personal emotions or opinions your cases or towards your clients. In this case, you have a professional worker who is also a friend and mother. Though a loyal friend has to put everything personally and focus on her client who happens to be her son’s friend as well. Psychology Today claimed in 2002, that the biggest problem with today 's young males is that they often have mild to moderate alexithymia—they are unable to identify their own (and others ') feelings and thus unable to communicate about them. They never learned how from absent or
Trying to become employed or maintain employment is extremely hard to do while receiving welfare assistant due to lack of resources. Some people simply stay on welfare because it’s how they can afford their bills. People that receive assistants do not receive much to start with, so in order to obtain employment the job would need to pay a decent salary to cover the needs of that individual, which jobs are only part time now a days which is far from enough to survive off. Like the text book stated “one full time job is not enough for a two person house hold”. Child care is also a huge problem for parents while trying to attend school and working. Most welfare recipient are single parent(DiNitto & Johnson, 2016) with lack of working skills,
... Release statistics show, 66.2 percent of 2012 high school graduates were enrolled in colleges or universities, but only 54 percent graduate from college. Continuing my education is important to me and will open many doors for me. Obtaining my degree will help me be a better person and also help others be better. A direct-service social worker helps people cope with challenges they are facing in their lives. Clinical social workers are therapists who diagnose and then treat individuals who have mental, behavioral and emotional disorders. With that being said, I will have to have full knowledge and an ample amount of education to help my clients. I will have enough education to help a child that just lost both of their parents, help guide that child, and show them there is someone to help them. Just like Anne Franks stated; “No one has ever become poor by giving.”
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. Whether the client needs counseling, guidance, or advocacy I want to be the person to help them. My drive for helping others and motivation to change social policies for the better is why I have chosen social work as my future profession.
Volunteering made me find my career plan in sociology / Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in ways. First, with the knowledge from college, I hope to counsel with young people& adults. In today's society, there are so many negative things that influence adults & young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become great citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other adults &young people by
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. I also believe strongly that people are inherently good and capable of doing good. All together, through different day to day experiences and my drive to do good and help facilitate change are just some of the reasons I am applying to a professional degree of social
My reasoning behind deciding to pursue a career in social work stems from my seemingly innate desire to see others succeed in fulfilling their potential. Although it feels somewhat of a cliché, my passion and desire for the field of social work originates from a genuine wish to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
The career of a social worker is not as attractive to many because it’s not a field where you can make a lot of money right away. I want to make good living once I enter the real world, but I also want to have a purpose in life. I have always loved to help people. I am a very nurturing person and have always been passionate about helping others. I want to be able to make a difference in my community and the lives of other people. I also want to be a social worker because I want a career where I can have some diversity. I do not want a job where I must be confined to a desk to perform my job daily. Each day will be a different challenge as a social worker. I need to be involved in a field where I will not be bored and pushed to resolve the many
Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
I have always known that I wanted to become a social worker, advocating for defenseless older adults and young children. I knew that I needed to change my life in order to achieve the goal that I set myself. Although I dropped out of high school at the age of 16, I knew that it was essential for me to return to school; so that I can begin my journey and achieve my goal. Two years after I left school I received my General Education Diploma. I enrolled at Citrus Community College and became the first in my family to receive an associate’s degree. I decided to continue my education at the University of La Verne and I a...
Social workers are described as “helpers,” because they help others resolve problems, obtain resources, provide support during crises, and facilitate social responses to needs. In my opinion, to be a social worker, you need to have a passion for helping others. Having personal experiences in the field of social work you want to work in is also good to have.
I chose to go into social work because the profession is not only my dream career, but my passion as well. The ability to call myself a social worker is not just my job title, but part of my identity. I have always wanted to make an impact on our world and be a leader in my generation, and social work is where my personal skill set and strengths will be best put to use. As the last 4 years in my undergraduate studies have rolled along, I have developed my unique, personal traits alongside brilliant minds belonging to the future social workers of America. Many of which plan on going right out into the field and using their degrees to make an immediate impact in their local communities. For me, I would love the opportunity to further hone my
