Child labor Most of the human beings experienced the sentiment of being exploited many times in their lives; so, how are children supposed to feel after being abused throughout their childhood? Child labor is described as the act that deprives teenagers of their childhood, potential or dignity, and is dangerous to their physical and intellectual development such as forced labor that interferes with their schooling, work that makes them depart school in early age and humiliation which is mentally and socially unsafe. The dilemma started in late 1700's and mid-1800's as the factory possessors utilized children to work on their machines since there are no laws to restrict the child labor or the proper age to work. As a result, this crisis still affects the world. Moreover, the present reasons for child labor are the same as those of the past including a restricted capacity of training, the lake of decisive laws that ban children labor and disappearance of working credit hours. Child labor influences their future because it hurts them in many forms of intellectual and physical ways including autism, paranoia, physical disabilities, burns and sexual harassment. Throughout time children have worked myriad hours in hazardous workplaces in order to make a few cents to a few dollars. This is known as child labor, where children are risking their lives daily for money. Today child labor continues to exist all over the world and even in the United States where children pick fruits and vegetables in difficult conditions. According to the article, “What is Child Labor”; it states that roughly 215 million children around the world are working between the ages of 5 and 17 in harmful workplaces. Child labor continues to exist because many families live in poverty and with more working hands there is an increase in income. Other families take their children to work in the fields because they have no access to childcare and extra money is beneficial to buy basic needs. Although there are laws and regulations that protect children from child labor, stronger enforcement is required because child labor not only exploits children but also has detrimental effects on a child’s health, education, and the people of the nation.

Between the 1800s and 1900s, many children worked in agricultural fields, fishing, mining, manufacturing, and even drug trade and prostitution. Within months of the arrival of the early settlers on American soil, they were faced with the bitter cold of winter. These settlers were unprepared for winter. They were still in the process of building their houses, they had not gathered enough food to survive through the season, and they had no means of keeping warm during these dangerous months. England was a society dominated by children. During the reign of Queen Victoria one out of three of her servants were under the age of fifteen. Child labor was a prominent issue, because there were no systems to ensure the safety of children. During the start of the industrial revolution, there was a “high demand” for labor (Robson 53). Many families moved from rural areas to new, industrialized cities. After a while things weren’t looking as “promising” as they did before (Boone 23). In order to maintain, families had to put almost all of their family members to work. This led to a rise in the number of child labor. Children were “mistreated, underpayed and overworked” (Kincaid 30). Using children to do all of the hard work, the mining companies believed, was the most sensible and efficient way to get the job done. Because the children were a lot smaller, it was easy for them to “maneuver through tight spaces” and on top of that the children demanded little or no pay at all(Boone 43 ). These wages were enough to persuade companies to use children for all sorts of dangerous jobs such as coal mining and chimney sweeps. Children were called to do many other “horrible” jobs, jobs that adults in this era could not bear, just so long as the bills were paid (Robson 18). The working conditions and treatment of young children during this era was horrible and a lot was done to put an end to it.

Some children were involved in illicit activities that included drug trade, prostitution, and other traumatic occupations that included serving as soldiers. Child Labor involved threatening children’s physical, mental, or emotional well- being. It involved intolerable abuse, such as slavery, child trafficking, debt bondage, forced labor or illicit activities and prevented children from going to school.
Child labor laws need to be enforced more because governments are paying little attention to those who abuse the laws; therefore children are being abused physically by long hours and economically by low pay. Farmers and many businesses in third world countries are accused of taking major advantage of these laws. This topic is highlighted as one of the highest controversial issues in labor politics. Child labor is a major issue in countries such as Africa, Argentina, and Bangladesh. For example, in Africa, some children do the work of a grown man for as little as one dollar a day. On the other hand, in the United States some studies show that child labor is a bigger problem in the U.S than some third world countries (Barta and others). Many farmers are facing a huge problem; the government is attempting to keep children from working long hours on their family farms.
Think about the cotton in your shirt, the sugar in your coffee, and the shoes on your feet, all of which could be products of child labor. Child labor is a practice that deprives children of their childhood, their potential, and their dignity and includes over 200 million children worldwide who are involved in the production of goods for companies and industries willing to exploit these kids for profit. Although most countries have laws prohibiting child labor, a lack of funding and manpower means that these laws are rarely enforced on a large scale. However, even for a first-world country like the United States, that has a large number of state and federal law enforcement officers, child labor is still a problem because priority is given to crimes that are more violent or heinous. Child labor must be made a priority issue because it is a global plague whose victims are physically and psychologically scarred, lack a proper education, are impoverished, and whose children are doomed to the same fate if nothing changes.
Child labor refers to work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children; interferes with their schooling by depriving them of the opportunity to attend school; obliging them to leave school prematurely or by requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work (International Labor Organization). Child labor has been a big problem ever since the Victorian Era. Many counties worldwide have used and still to this day use child labor. Though there are many laws that have been implemented against using children to work, many countries tend to ignore them. In my paper I will be discussing countries where child labor is present, push to stop child labor, companies that use child labor, the effects on children, and the reasons for child labor.

Children are supposed to enjoy their time as kids doing fun activities, playing around, going to school, consequently, when child labor is in effect that all changes. Now the fun activities that a child used to like to do is gone and replaced with labor that is hard and can sometimes be dangerous. The average working hours for a child in most places where child labor is relevant is 14 hours a day. The average wage a child receives is an average of around $4.25 an hour. Children who do work, mostly work in catastrophic health conditions and very little to no safety policies.
The article explains that people may disagree with a lot of thing but we can be sure that people may agree that children can’t struggle with poverty. We can’t end poverty but we can work to end poverty in some child lives. Children didn’t choose to be poor and their parents, country, state , race, color, neighborhood, and faith. There are 35 countries living in poverty and united states is 34thposition on child poverty. People who experience poverty during the children tend to be more likely to experience poverty during the adult life.
This statistic provided by The United Nations Children’s Funds is very alarming and this is supposed to be an average percentage in first world countries. This is unacceptable, because if first world countries --developed countries-- can’t help their citizens get out of poverty, what can others expect from different countries. UNICEF also finds,“ In the US, meanwhile 30 percent of children live in poverty, significantly above the 20 percent global average.” (UNICEF). These statistics are disappointing because the United States is supposed to be “the land of opportunity” but how can we be the land of opportunity if we can’t take care of our people? This essay focuses on one significant issue in this world: children who live in poverty and how poverty affects their health and emotional state.
