What Developmental Challenges do Children and Adults Face? Not too long ago, we as humans used to think that children were simply smaller versions of adults. Then recently a study was conducted and began to comprehend that childhood is a unique and important part of life. When it comes to Psychology – Developmental Psychology is one of the prevalent fields with Psychology, and it doesn’t just look at children; it looks at all aspects of a person’s lifespan. So the question is “What is Development”? Development is the growth of humans through a lifespan from the time they are conceived until death. Isolation is the start of stage five, and this is noticed in early stages of adulthood when they are starting to explore personal relationships. When a young adult creates a close and committed relationship they will become successful at feeling committed and secure. Erikson believed that it was very important for a young adult to experience this stage because it will give the young adult a sense of personal identity, which is vital to creating intimate relationships with others. Erikson realized that if a young adult doesn’t experience this type of building skills, they would suffer from emotional isolations or possible less committed relationships. In adulthood, they will start the Generativity vs. Stagnation, stage seven. This is where the adult will start to focus on careers and family. When an adult goes through this stage, they will become successful and experience a sense of contribution to the world. Here is where they will start being active in their home and to the community. An adult that fails to learn this stage will not be as productive and have no involvement in the world. When a child is taught to be proud of these accomplishments, this will follow through into adulthood and thus will follow with their life partner. The final stage is called Integrity vs. Despair, which is noticed during their old age and they start to look back on their life. When they feel proud of what they have done and accomplished in their life, they will show a sense of integrity with very few regret in what they did.
