Giving can be the most rewarding feeling you may ever experience. Giving, defined as, freely transferring the position of something to someone without expecting anything in return (www.dictionary.reference.com, 2015). For example, giving someone money to buy food for their kids. The act of giving something to someone makes us all feel good. Even if all we can, give is a smile. However, sometimes circumstances require us to give more than just a smile. Maybe volunteering one’s time or using a skill set to help someone in need. Similarly, one can donate monetarily towards a charitable cause, such as helping prevent child abuse. Child abuse and neglect effects over I million children in America every year and costs the nation $220 million every day (Richard J. Gelles & Staci Perlman, 2012). There are many different forms of child abuse. For example, there is emotional abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and maltreatment of children with disabilities. Studies have shown that abused children are more susceptible to physical and mental illness and involvement in criminal activities, and makes academic achievement more difficult (America, Mission, 2013). One charitable organization, Prevent Child Abuse America, is fighting the battle against child abuse on a daily basis. They understand the importance of child development as a building block for both the community and economic growth. However, this battle would not happen without the generous donations from the community. Understanding the different kinds of child abuse and neglect, will explain why, Prevent Child Abuse America, needs one’s help in accomplishing their mission against this preventable act upon our nation’s greatest treasure, its children.
