Chemistry plays an important role in being a veterinarian. A veterinarian is “a person qualified to treat diseased or injured animals.”(Merriam-Webster Dictionary) One reason why chemistry is important in being a veterinarian is that veterinarians use chemistry to diagnose disease in sick animals and seemingly healthy animals. Also Veterinarians use chemistry to prescribe medications and treatments for sick animals and observe the response the animal has to the treatment. The last impact that chemistry on being on veterinarian is that veterinarians use chemistry to interpret diagnostic tests and also to analyze the test results. These are just some reasons on why chemistry is important on being a veterinarian.

In the same article I used in the second paragraph, Out of Africa: A Tale of Gorillas, Heart Disease and a Swamp Plant by Cheryl Lyn Dybas it states “Autopsies performed on gorillas who have died of Fibrosing Cardiomyopathy show evidence of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle that leads to heart failure.” (Dybas pg.393) This is explaining that veterinarians interpreted the result and it lead to what was causing the disease, showing that veterinarians used chemistry to figure that out. The last example is on the article Aquaculture Veterinarian by Megan Sullivan when it says “ Once I determine the cause(s) of disease, I work with the producer to remedy the situation and prevent similar problems in the future.” (Sullivan pg.48) This is showing that once the veterinarians analyze the test results they use their knowledge of chemistry to determine a cure for it and try to prevent future
For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals,test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science.You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
Equine veterinarians are animal doctors who provide medical care for horses. They examine, test and occasionally operate on or euthanize the animals. Travel to ranches and farms is often necessary, and equine vets have to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions. Being an equine veterinarian is a pleasant career choice because of great interactions with varied types of horses and their owners , the basic information, and the pros and cons of an equine veterinarian.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.

I strive to be a veterinarian because I love animals and I enjoy taking care of them. Ever since the beginning of the human race there has been veterinary medicine. Agriculture and the domestication of animals began around 3000 B.C. However, there aren’t many records on the failures and successes of the early veterinarians. The early Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hindu civilizations were the first to leave some records of veterinarian medicine. We didn’t first get veterinary hospitals until about 250 B.C. In 1862 the Department of Agriculture (USDA) was created. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association wasn’t found until 1863 after many unsuccessful attempts at organization. “In 1884, another milestone was passed with enactment of the Hatch Act, creating the Bureau of Animal Industry within the Department of Agriculture (Swope 19).” In the last 25 years veterinary medicine has assumed a leading role in the advancement of many researches. Some of them are the advancement of research in the medical use of atomic energy, in diseases common to humans and animals, etc.
Veterinary Medicine is a competitive field, whether you are going for your Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or to be a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). There will be competitive programs you will need to do well in to be able to continue working at getting a degree to this field. A veterinarian or vet is a professionally skilled worker licensed in providing a wide range of medical care to diverse types of animals. Nurses monitor vital signs, administer medication and insert IV’s. It is extremely important that they know how to give the correct dosage of medication to their patients because the wrong dosage could harm the patient. Chemistry gives nurses the knowledge about compounds like medicine. It teaches them what medications are made of and what they will do to the patient when it is administered. Understanding chemistry will allow nurses to know why medications within the same classification or similar names do not work the same.

Testing is done as a check on the safety of new drugs or substances for human or animal use, and to check whether new batches of drugs and other agents like vaccines work. There is a legal requirement to test how safe and effective chemicals, drugs and other agents are before they can be sold.
There are a variety of duties and tasks that veterinarians do. Since they never know what they will be doing that day they have to always be prepared for whatever walks in the door. People think that they just check over an animal and tell the owner what they are doing well and what they need to fix, but veterinarians do much more. They have to determine diseases, prescribe medications, prevent diseases, collect data from animals, interpret new problems, set bones, dress wounds, and many more things that. The list goes on and on because they never know what they need to do. Those are some of the simpler things this occupation has to handle. More of the complex tasks of this job would be delivering newborn animals, performing surgery, interpreting x-rays, and many more things that are also too extensive to include. These are just things that involve solving the problems of animals. Most people don’t realize that veterinarians have to attend lectures, conferences, and meetings so they can continue learning about new things they need to preform.
