In this exercise, the information focuses around the case study of Charleston, South Carolina. The case study consists of the symptoms, the diagnosis, the cure, and the prevention for a healthy community in Charleston. Key components within this report focus on the built environment to which this community needed to thrive. Just as humans need a healthy heart, a community also needs to have a strong nourishing environment to sustain the overall health to its people. In Charleston, Mayor Joseph “Joe” Riley heads the development and revitalization of the city's infrastructure and has done so for the better part of 30 years. Under his lead, the city has transformed two major problems. These issues were a “dying downtown and a crumbling urban housing stock” (Jackson & Sinclair, 2012). His plan consisted of creating home ownership, connectedness, and economic development. The mayor identified what the residents need most, a home. Instead of tearing down older structures and replacing them, Mayor Riley choose to renovate and refurbish the existing structures that the city already had in place. He believes fixing the old not only retains the character of the structures, but it also retains the design features that tend to be overlooked in modern structures. In an interview regarding Charleston and the view he has of it, Mayor Riley states, “A historic city should be a living place” (Charles, O., & Lee, C., 2015). Fixing the old also creates intrigue, value, and when completed, should have a greener aspect for protecting the future generations of inhabitants.
