Charles Darwin by far, revolutionized biology as known to modern society. He is responsible for the theory of evolution that people of today still go by. He was born on February 12, 1809 in England as the fifth child into the family of Dr. Robert and Susannah Darwin. He had three older sisters and one older brother. Because of his father’s success as a physician, and his mother coming from the Wedgewood family fortune, the Darwin family was considered well-off. Robert Darwin worked many great hours while Susannah stayed home to take care of the children. Unfortunately, when Charles was eight years old his mother passed away from complications of an illness that she had for a year. From that point on, Robert began working much more and depended on the older two girls to raise and take after the other children. That is when Charles began getting an education. He did not like school at all and did very poorly. He much rather enjoyed hunting and collecting things. He had an extreme fascination with animals and traveling. He’d follow his brother all over, including to Wales. One day at the age of sixteen, however, his father told him that he had to make something of himself. Charles was expected to follow the family tradition and become a doctor. He was sent to Edinburgh University where he received his Bachelor of Medicine degree. Though he completed his schooling, Charles knew he was not cut out to be a doctor so he continued on to the school Christ College in Cambridge where he studied theology. He had hopes of becoming a clergymen but that all changed when he befriended John Henslow. John Henslow was a professor of botany. Previous theories of evolution had not been able to explain how species had been able to evolve without a guiding force. Darwin’s answer was natural selection. He felt that the process of natural selection explained evolution. It was also the first piece that offered a large amount of evidence to back up the theory. No other scientist was able to do such a thing therefore; they were ridiculed and laughed at. Charles Darwin is responsible for the current understanding of life and evolution. It is taught in schools and respected highly. He has changed the course of science with his theory and advanced so many minds with his discovery. Before Charles Darwin, there were many scientists throughout his family. His father, Dr. Robert Darwin, was a medical doctor, and his grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, was a well-known botanist. Darwin’s mother, Susannah Darwin, died when he was only eight years old. Darwin was a child that came from wealth and privilege and who loved to explore nature. In October 1825 at age sixteen, Darwin enrolled at Edinburgh University with his brother Erasmus. Two years later, Charles became a student at Christ’s College in Cambridge. His father wanted him to become a medical doctor, as he was, but since the sight of blood made Darwin nauseous, he refused. His father also proposed that he become a priest, but since Charles was far more interested in natural history, he had other ideas in mind (Dao, 2009)

Second semester of my freshman year here at Public University, I took the Honors section of Botany 180. The class dealt primarily with the evolution of man and the study of evolution throughout history. A few of the many names we encountered in the course were Mendel, Huxley, Lyell, and Darwin. However, Charles Darwin and his theories were the primary focus of our discussions. This is when I was first exposed in-depth to Darwinism. The ideas we studied and the concepts we explored laid the foundation for my thinking on the whole subject of evolution and how man ìcame to be.î Major points about Darwin that impressed me the most were his devotion to the study of his environment, the depth of his writings, and the influence he had on his peers and consequently, the whole scientific world. Furthermore, I was impressed at the fact that over one hundred years after his death, his theories still lay the foundation for scientific thought and evolutionary exploration.

On a trip to South America, he and the rest of the crew visited the near by Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was there he noticed many different variations of the same general plants and birdshe saw previously in South America. He also observed ancient fossils of extinct organisms that closely resembled modern organisms. By 1859, all of these observations inspired him to write down his theories. He wanted to explain how evolution had occurred through a process called natural selection. In his published work, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life, or On the Origin of Species for short, Darwin stated that, "new species have come on the stage slowly and at successive intervals."(1) He also said, "old forms are supplanted by new and improved forms," and all organisms play a part in the "struggle for life.
