The marketing mix, which is basic to any organization, can be considered the ‘controllable’ variables that every business encounters. These controllable variables can be modified based on the uncontrollable variables (external factors found in Environmental Scan) that directly affect business operations. A company focuses on four elements in the marketing mix: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion, which are managed and coordinated through marketing programs in efforts to appeal to their target market. Marketers strive to understand what motivates consumers to purchase certain products. The marketing mix helps to break down some of these questions: What will consumers buy? How much will they spend? Where will they buy? And will they buy again?
Firstly, one of the most important focuses would be given to the target customer as we will need to know more about their taste and preferences. What it is they need and or want. Particular topics covering this area will be, the need for ‘Market segmentation’, identifying a competitive position in the market about to enter in the market and studying consumer behaviour, will all be discussed.
At the start of this module, I had no idea what to expect. When I heard the term “Marketing”, only one thing came to my mind: presentations. When I used to be in school, I remembered vaguely that my presentation skills weren’t exactly even close to Suze Orman, who is considered to be America’s most motivational speaker. In fact, they were so bad, I wasn’t sure of doing this course in the beginning. But then it wasn’t like I had a choice. I had opted for BA Hons. Business Management and the course came along with a module named Marketing.
One of the best ways to describe marketing is: Marketing is managing profitable customer relationships. The goal is to attract fresh customers by promising greater value and to keep and grow current customers by delivering satisfaction. We further define marketing management as the art and science of selecting target markets and building profitable relationships with them. This is how the marketing strategy was formed in this submission.
Once the target market has been identified it is important to develop a marketing strategy. In today's fast paced, information overloaded society; conveying a message about a product seems to be more difficult than ever. The consumer is bombarded with advertising everywhere they look. Today advertising not only exists on television, radio, magazines, and newspapers, it can be found on billboards, park benches, in our mailboxes, on buses, taxis, at sporting events, and on clothing.
Given the changing market environment, the need for more efficient and cost effective marketing strategies has induced changes to the way marketers conduct their marketing activities and led to the adoption of more integrated approaches (Dewhirst & Davis, 2005). Before the marketing strategy lecture for week one I had a basic knowledge of market-led and strategic market planning (Wilson and Gilligan 2005).However, my understanding of marketing before the lecture was that marketing is all about selling products.
