“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.” - Winnie the Pooh. Friendship is one of the things that helps build you as a person. It shapes who you are, and potentially who you will be. Having friends can be crucial to both your mental health and your physical health, and it’s important to know how to maintain friendships and some of the key factors in doing so. Although friendship is loosely defined as “the state of being friends”, it is better termed in layers. The term ‘friendship’ is not only the state of being friends, but involves multiple complex qualities. “Respecting others is a silent way to express our feeling for them. It’s an unspoken way of communication which builds unshaken and strong relations between people respecting each other. When a person shows respect for someone, then it means that the person has some value for him.”₂. An example of respect would be talking out something you have different opinions about with someone, and not letting it have an impact on the way you think of them. If you were to be judgmental of them and allow their opinion to become harmful to your relationship or give disrespectful and inconsiderate feedback, it wouldn’t be respectful. Respect is important for both persons in a friendship to have because there is a balance of responsibility to hold each other up. It encourages you to be respectful not only pertaining to the friendship, but to yourself when making decisions pertaining to relationships in general. It also plays a vital role in communication.
