Characteristics Of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking traits are parts of a person’s character. Many critical thinking traits are difficult to acquire to a full degree, or to act in a consistent way. As thinkers, we can improve in each of these traits and can develop these traits over time. Being able to fully consider yourself as a critical thinker, developing all of these traits must occur. These character traits can somewhat be difficult to overcome or to improve on certain traits. The two traits, confidence in reason and intellectual perseverance stand out to me the most based on current experiences. Confidence in reason is the habitual tendency to trust reflective thinking to solve problems and making decisions by thinking their way through questions and issues to the best of their ability. This specifically applies to individuals and to groups. For example, there has been some issues with loss prevention at the retail store where I currently work. This past Tuesday night, I was the one closing the store along with another associate. There is a trend that has been happening when while she is working, the drawers had night seem to consistently be short. As I counted the drawers, in fact, there was a few dollars missing. I asked the associate if there was any money she took out for returns, or was put back in the safe. She stated that there was no return transaction done on the specific register and did not have anything to do with the safe that night. I had no reason not to believe her because she stated that she did not take out any money or any returns. I proceeded and called my store manager to report the loss and also had to call loss prevention to let them become aware that the deposit to the bank is going to be shorter than expected. Confidence in reason is centered on the belief that one’s own greater interests, and those of mankind will be best aided by giving unrestricted play to reason. Encouraging people to be able to come to their own decisions by emerging their own lucid abilities can help them become more attentive and improve in this specific trait. Intellectual perseverance can create some problems that are varied and cannot be easily solved. An intellectually perseverant person shows firm obedience to coherent principles despite the unreasonable conflict of others, and has a genuine sense of the need to struggle with confusion or troubled questions over an extended time to accomplish understanding or perception. Becoming more aware of these traits and know which traits are your strengths and weaknesses, can help with becoming a better critical thinker.
