“No matter how hard you try, a turd is a turd,” said the crusty headmaster on the movie “The History Boys” In the American class system, the common dream many of us hold is the idea that in this country moving from lower class to upper class, or vice versa (going from upper class to lower class), is possible. However, many Americans don’t see that the idea of social class is not just income based but also based on a set of cultural ideas/beliefs and behavior associated with being in lower, middle, or upper class. Like it was seen over 80 years ago, “New Money” (newly rich) will never truly stand to the caliber of the “Old Money” (Bluebloods) regardless of the income they bring to the table. For example, Bill Gates would be considered upper class according to this modernized system. In reality, though, class does not really have to do with income but more so based on one’s characteristics such as the values and aspirations they hold; as practiced in the true class system that had been used over centuries. Let’s take a look at Bill Gates, his fortune and image depend on the effort he puts into it, on the flip side Queen Elizabeth II’s wealth is an accumulation of past generations in power. In 1940s, at the age of 25, my grandfather met the love of his life, my grandmother. After marrying that year, realizing he wanted to start a family, my grandfather detested the idea of his children growing up in poverty, having to sleep on cold slabs of concrete. He not only wanted to give his children a good life but he wanted to make sure his wife never went without. She had come from old money, having established businesses in Cadiz, Spain, over a span of generations. She was born into a noble life for her Spanish roots. Her family was able to afford to have her educated. She was clothed in beautiful silks throughout her childhood. Her skin was fair and clean and kept as such by nannies. Her blue eyes dazzled those around her with the charm she was born with, never seeing struggle as a child. She would be compared to a porcelain doll with utterly no imperfections. As an adult, she had the perfect posture and mannerisms of a lady and dressed in wonderfully expensive dresses given to her by her wealthy parents whom also insisted on her wearing beautiful jewels. So you may wonder, how does a weather beaten, hard working man whose appearance may not have been that of princes but a fairly attractive fella, attract such a fine and beautiful young lady?
