“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for is to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, they don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird” (93) Harper Lee wrote To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus tells his children that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because “they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out.” It would be out of line to kill a Mockingbird because they are innocent. The Mockingbird represents Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. These two characters are completely harmless. Many people in Maycomb Alabama, believe what Atticus did for Tom Robinson was very wrong and they began to hate and disrespect him and his family but atticus never cared. …show more content…

When atticus takes the assignment to defend Tom Robinson, he explains to Jem that he cannot tell his children one thing and do the complete opposite and he also says he hopes he “get Jem and Scout through this without bitterness and most of all,without catching Maycomb’s disease” (117). Most of Maycomb has a racist view on everything and atticus wants to change that, he knows that taking on this trial will impact the racist perspective for some people, Atticus understands how racism is destroying the city of Maycomb and defending Tom Robinson will definitely help cure the racist disease. Yet another example,Atticus is not judgmental, he lives the same way he teaches, Miss Maudie says “Atticus Finch is the same in house as he is on the public streets” (46). His honesty and courage at the jail and at Tom Robinson’s trial had an effect on Mr. Underwood and also Mr. Cunningham. Even when Bob Ewell spat at his face, Atticus did not lower down to his level, he just kept his head held high and proved that he is no fake in public, he is a true man who lives what he believes in. When people are rude, he teaches his children to just simply let it go and walk away. In short, Atticus taking on this trial helps impact others to learn how to tolerate others for who they
