In the movie Spider-Man 2, the main character Peter Parker is a young, talented, and intelligent male who recently became the new superhero of New York City. As the city looks to Spider-Man to defeat villains and rid the city of all things bad and evil, the civilian’s of New York become very dependent on the new superhero. Although the movie is incredibly entertaining and has encouraging propositions of hope, strength, and courage, there are concerning messages throughout the movie. After a long two hours and twenty-two minutes of sexual tension between Peter and Mary Jane, they finally end up together and kiss. The ending scene is concerning to the audience due to the lack of confidence Mary Jane expresses on her face on the final seconds of the film, as she watches Spider-Man fulfill his duties of saving the city. Holland states, “This lack of closure provides a more thoughtful ending to the superhero movie and enriches the film’s post-9/11 allegorical resonances. Happiness is achieved only temporarily; the future remains uncertain” (300). This scene puts a fearful thought in the minds of the audience. Mary Jane, doubting Spider-Man and his ability to protect the city, can help influence Americans to think the same about our nation and the people who protect it. With a tragedy as serious as 9/11, it is so easy to have a pessimistic and doubtful view of the future. When Spider-Man 2 was released in theatres, it was just three short years after the attacks. At this point in time, America is still healing. It is crucial that people remain optimistic and hopeful for the future.
