John Steinbeck novel The Grapes of Wrath focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by a drought, economic hardship, agricultural industry changes and bank foreclosures forcing farmers like the Joads out of work. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they are trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for a journey west, to California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", which are people from Oklahoma, they seek jobs, land, and a better future. Tom Joad, he drinks whiskey on occasion and he likes girls and dances a lot. He is Ma Joad 's favorite child, but you should not tell the other five kids, and he does not like it when people swerve to hit animals on the road he says, "Gives me a little shakes ever ' time." The author uses the characters particular dialogue and actions to reveal aspects of the character by showing the reader who the character really is. Tom Joad was not over thirty. Tom Joad has been in prison for four years. The great depression is taking a hit on the farmers. After Tom gets out of prison he tries to find his family at their family farm, just to find out that his family got removed from their house. Tom finds his family at his uncle’s house planning a journey west for a job opportunity. On this journey west Tom opens up, he undertakes the role of his friend Jim Casy. By using particular lines of dialogue and action the reader is able to inference Tom’s character using information that the author provided.
