THE LION KING LORE
Introduction
The Lion King is a movie created by Disney and was released in the summer of 1994. It is about a pride of lions that uphold the cycle of nature, or as they call it “the circle of life” (The Lion King, 1994). The lion pride is considered royalty within the “Pride Lands” and are just and fair when it comes to hunting only what they need. A young prince named Simba is introduced and he is next in line to be the future king. However, Simba’s uncle Scar had other plans. He believed that it was his right all along to be named future king and wanted all of the glory to himself. Eventually, Scar comes up with an elaborate plan to rid the Pride Lands of Simba and the current King, Mufasa and take the throne for himself.

Often, people want to live a carefree life without taking responsibility for their actions. This can be seen when Simba runs away from his problems instead of facing them head-on right away. His friends, Timone and Pumbaa, represent the wide gate that leads to hell because they intend to live their lives free from any moral convictions. Simba lives his life in this way until his father appears before him to remind him of the way he should be living his life. This can be seen as God testing a man’s character to see which way he will go. Will he continue to lead a carefree and sinful life or will he take the path of the straight and narrow? Jesus Christ also struggled prior to his crucifixion when he prayed to God to see if there was any other way to save mankind from their sins. Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39). Simba struggles within himself as he’s calling out to his father, Mufasa, showing that in the same way he wants to save his lion pride and the other animals but wishes for there to be another way around
If you have children in tow, and are looking for a family-fun, delightful movie to watch, “Song of the South” is worth a viewing. Or perhaps you are a fan of the Uncle Remus tales you have read when you were little, then “Song of the South” will certainly give some justice to those fun tales.
Patrick Lewis, the protagonist in the story, In The Skin Of A Lion, goes through an internal change in his beliefs and in his personality; these changes can be noticed throughout the novel. Patrick goes through relationships throughout his life that end up manipulating his view of other’s actions. These key personality changes can be found in the relationships that Patrick had with Clara Dickens, as well as his relationship with Alice Gull. Michael Ondaatje, the author, clearly shows the mental change that Mr. Lewis endured, by showing his compassion and caring with Ms. Dickens; then his attitude changed once Alice influenced him. Nearing the end of the story the change becomes obvious, with his need for revenge, and the interpretation of his attitude with his final actions in the novel.

Luke Skywalker, Bilbo Baggins, Katniss Everdeen, Harry Potter; all examples of virtuous heroes in literature, heroes that are recognized and exemplified, heroes that inspire. These heroes have achieved this grand title due to their incredible heroic journeys consisting of many struggles, battles, and sacrifices. As Joseph Campbell states, “The composite hero of the monomyth is a personage of exceptional gifts. Frequently he is honored by his society, frequently unrecognized or disdained. He and/or the world in which he finds himself suffers from a symbolical deficiency” (29-30). Now, all these heroes may have different appearances and character traits, but the single factor that makes them all the same is their journey. This pattern of the
Gathering together followers, he seeks to share his understanding of God to those around him. Though he is still unsure of who he is, or what God is leading him towards, he listens to the advice of John the Baptist and heads out into the desert, drawing a circle around himself and waiting for an answer to the difficulties he is facing. Rather than a clear answer from God, Jesus is visited by the Great Tempter. The force of his will allows him to overcome these first temptations, which then gives him the confidence to return to his disciples, with Messianic aspirations.

What is the circle of life? In a time when the Disney animation renaissance ruled the cinema world, one movie had ruled entirely over all. In 1994 at the height of the company’s own resurrection, Disney released the epic musical drama The Lion King. It was a critically acclaimed movie that has spawned off into a Broadway musical, a spin-off show, and two sequels. I first saw the Lion King when I was three years old and to this day is one of my favorite movies. Little did I know the Lion King was much more than a movie about a young lion stepping in place of his father’s absence, but more of a spin on the Shakespeare play Hamlet. The movie resonates to me now more then ever as I am older and can identify the themes and influences in the movie.
