Throughout Beloved we are inclined to believe that the ghost haunting home 124 was Sethes deceased child, but like Denver by the end of the novel it is clear to the reader that Beloved was something more than just a sister. The most evident role Beloved had was that of the baby Sethe lost; however, she also represented Sethes mother and the embodied souls of other slaves who had passed. Now her impact of her rebirth was not primarily negative: it happened to be mixed because of the fact Beloved made it necessary for each character to move to a better future and not be stuck in the past. Although Beloved was initially thought to be a normal slave woman who was kept in confinement by a slave master it becomes clear to us that she may have been …show more content…

Unfortunately throughout the novel we go through the different past experiences of Sethe, Paul D, Sixo, and many others on the turf of Sweet Home. Since Sethes deceased baby happened to be only two years old there would not have been much she could have remembered but she seems to have memories that are not her own. For example, there are several instances where she is referencing the slave ship: “Hot. Nothing to breathe down there and no room to move in. Heaps. A lot of people down there. Some is dead” (88) and “daylight comes through the cracks and I can see his locked eyes I am not big small rats do not wait for us to sleep some one is thrashing but there is no room to do it in” (248). The references to the passage to America is one that Beloved has never experienced so it leads the readers to believe she is not just one ghost: she is several. Moreover, she also states a reference to the many slaves who inhibit her when after Sethe is choked she says “I kissed her neck. I didn 't choke it. The circle of iron choked it” (119). This reference could be drawing attention to the chains that were placed around the slaves necks – also known as “the chain gang”. With Sethe Beloved was able to bring out the bad memories to start the healing process that Sethe desperately needed. For example, when Sethe was talking to Amy about healing Amy states “More it hurt more better it is. Can 't nothing heal without pain, you know” (92). Since Beloved had been bringing up the memories of Sweet Home, Sethes childhood and that day Schoolteacher came Sethe was able to begin to let go of her hurtful past and try to move on towards a better future with Paul D and Denver. A future where Sethe is able to “ Collect all the pieces of her that were fine and beautiful” (192) and put them back together to make herself whole again. Paul D was another person that Beloved seemed to have a negative impact on in the beginning since it seemed she tried to break the bond between Sethe and Paul D: “He wasn 't being nervous, he was being prevented” (136). For him he felt as if he was a rag doll the way that “She moved him. And Paul D didn 't know how to stop it because it looked like he was moving himself” (134). However, it is easy to see that her seduction of Paul D was to open up his “tobacco tin that was rusted shut” (137) in the place of where his heart was : “Red heart. Red heart. Red heart” (138). His heart coming back to life was a sign
