?A Worn Path? shares the life of Phoenix Jackson. The story carries us on a journey of difficulties and trials, that prove to be worth the struggles in the name of love. The author captivates the audience with this story through the vivid description of the characters, the plot that establishes underlying themes, and the conclusion which shares a valuable life lesson. Throughout the story ?A Worn Path? , the author introduces a few important characters. The main character, Phoenix Jackson, is an elderly, African American woman that treks a difficult excursion in order to obtain medicine for her grandson. Even though Phoenix is elderly and physically weak, she is adamant to reach her destination because of the endearment for her loved one. Phoenix displays a strong faith in God during her trials. A white man and a nurse are two minor characters. Both characters seem to have a tone of superiority towards Ms. Jackson due to her race. She does this because of the time of year not because she cares. Phoenix takes the 5 pennies with the nickel she had stolen earlier in the story and purchases her grandson a windmill. This windmill represents hope for her grandson. Instead of thinking her grandson will never be healed, Phoenix hopes that he will continue fighting on this worn path. As long as the grandson continues to fight this physical ailment, the grandmother will also continue to fight the everyday struggles like race and poverty. She will continue to journey through the woods and fight through every obstacle for the person she loves the most. As we fight through the obstacles along our journey in life, we will pave the way for the people we love the
