6. What types of choral ensembles are appropriate at the high school level?
A senior level concert choir would be an appropriate high school level ensemble. This ensemble would be audition based with both men and women. These students have the highest musical and singing achievement. Another ensemble would be the chamber singers ensemble, which a group of selected singers from the concert choir. This group is smaller and does music that would be less effective in a larger group. A general mixed choir should also be offered at the high school level. This group is open to all male and female students that would like to be in choir. Then a choral union group can be offered at the high school level, which includes a mixed chorus that are weaker singers. This group can combine with other choirs for performance but it gives weaker singers an opportunity to sing. Another opportunity for high school ensembles is to create men’s and women’s choirs. There are many different songs that can be used for both men’s and women’s choruses that may not be available for combined voices. Last, high school choral programs can have show choirs, swing choirs and jazz choirs. This encourages more popular singing and possibly dancing.
10. Why is early adolescence a difficult time for students to be in a mixed ensemble, and how can this situation be avoided?
Boys are can become self-conscious of sounding like girls or having their voices “crack” during adolescence. Girls have some voice changes but also have physical changes, which can make them feel self-conscious around boys. ... and sight-singing. The way I look at the rating scale is 1 needs major improvement and 5 has been singing all their life.
19. What criteria can be used to classify voices?
In classifying voices you should consider range, tessitura, vocal quality, voice lifts and speaking pitch. The tessitura is the comfort zone for singing within the outer limits of their range. Students that have heavier, darker voices tend to be more basses, altos and mezzo sopranos. Students that have lighter, brighter voices are likely to be more of baritones, tenors and sopranos. You should also listen for lifts in a student’s voice show upper (head voice) and lower (chest voice) ranges.
20. What two things are needed to become efficient at choral auditioning?
It takes time and practice to become efficient at choral auditioning. You will not become a master at auditioning overnight.
