America decided to expand outwards. However, America was not aware of the many tactics they needed in order to expand overseas. Because of the unawareness, the United States had to use many moves that they have not used before in earlier expansion projects. They had it quite easier than the expansion of the 1890s because they first expanded westward. The lands that they moved into were still a continuous piece of their territories, making it more effortless to be claimed by the United States. The expansion of the 1890s involved more complicated acquisitions, including acquiring of islands that consisted of a large population. Another difference is the purpose of the expansion. Earlier, America looked to expand for the only reason for settlement; in contrast, in 1890s, they were not expanding for the same reason, rather for their usefulness. For example, naval bases were created; trading outposts and commercial centers were also made. They were attended to be colonies, not states added to the original territory.
